44 “Harlan, what the hell is going on?” Adam asked, as soon as the dust cleared. Harlan sighed. “You gotta be tired of hearing me say this by now, but I don’t know.” He walked back to the steps, where Teddy had left the remaining bag of sandwiches and two big bottles of water. “Come on, let’s get in the house. Something about being in the open here makes my skin crawl.” Adam followed Harlan inside because he didn’t know what else to do. His head ached, he felt shivery all over, and he suspected his nose had started bleeding again. Harlan plopped down on a crackling cot and pulled a couple of peanut butter sandwiches from the bag. “And paper towels, too. Iris would be proud,” he said, handing a sandwich to Adam as he sat on the opposite cot. Adam was so thirsty, it was a physical pain,
