21 “What the hell were you thinking?” JJ demanded as she stepped into the room. Iris rose from her chair alongside Ulysses Mason’s bed and walked slowly, carefully to meet her. The woman looked old and worn out. “Perhaps we should take this somewhere else,” she said. JJ glanced at the sleeping patient before checking the hallway. It was empty, as it usually was in this part of the hospital, this time of night. There were few staff on duty, and even fewer visitors. She stepped back in and shut the door behind her. “I think we’ll be fine here,” JJ said, but kept her voice low. “Why did you send Adam away?
