Luther raised his collar against the wind. “Damn, it is getting chilly,” he said, climbing in the car. Les, sweaty from being inside, grunted in agreement and adjusted his sunglasses. “How long you been dating Esther?” Luther asked. “Off and on a few months.” “You never mentioned anything before.” Les shrugged. His reticence reminded Luther of the single occasion he’d fetched his much younger adolescent brother from school. “You remember that time mom sent me to pick you up?
