31 “Adam?” It was Harlan’s voice. Adam was lying on a bed. He felt the mattress shift and tried to open his eyes, but there was something heavy on top of them. “Okay,” Harlan said. “I’m going to remove this from your eyes. Don’t try to take in too much too fast. We think the stimulation helps set you off.” The pressure on Adam’s face eased, and light bombarded his eyes. His vision was blurry, with loops and dark circles, the way it would get when he and JJ and Danny pressed against their eyeballs as kids. Eventually, he became aware of a ceiling above him, sheets of thin plywood secured with screws.
