The black car did not move .
It sat across the street like a quiet watcher . Engine running, headlights off, windows dark .
Elena stood near the tall glass window and stared at it .
Her pulse beat faster with each second .
Something about the stillness felt wrong .
Not the kind of pause from someone waiting for a friend, not the casual patience of a driver .
This felt deliberate, like a trap waiting for the right moment to close .
“Miss Hart .”
Adrian’s voice came from behind her again .
Elena did not turn immediately .
“That car .”
Adrian stepped beside her and followed her gaze .
“Yes .”
“You noticed it too .”
“It has been there longer than necessary .”
Elena crossed her arms .
“My sister received threats tonight .”
Adrian’s eyes shifted toward her .
“Threats ?”
Elena hesitated for a brief moment, she did not plan to reveal anything but something about the car , the messages , and Clara’s fear pushed her forward .
“Yes .”
Adrian’s voice lowered .
“Explain .”
Elena kept her gaze fixed on the car .
“She has been looking into something . Financial records .”
Adrian’s expression remained controlled .
“What kind of records ?”
“Transfers . Hidden ones .”
Adrian did not respond immediately . Elena finally turned toward him .
“She received a message telling her to stop . Then another message saying they know she copied files .”
Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly .
“When did this start ?”
“Before the wedding .”
“And you are telling me this now ?”
Elena held his gaze .
“I did not know who to trust .”
Adrian accepted the answer with a small nod .
“Fair .”
He looked back toward the car again .
“You believe whoever sent those messages sits inside that vehicle ?”
“I do not know . But the timing is too close .”
Adrian’s expression turned thoughtful .
“Stay here .”
Without waiting for a reply he stepped away and moved quickly toward the exit of the ballroom .
Elena watched him go .
For a moment she wondered if she made a mistake by telling him but instinct told her something larger moved beneath the surface of this night .
She turned back toward the window bhe black car still remained in place .
A few guests exited the hotel through the main entrance . Some entered their vehicles and drove away .
Still the car did not move .
Minutes passed .
Then Adrian appeared outside the hotel entrance .
He stepped onto the sidewalk and looked directly toward the black sedan .
The figure inside the car did not move . Adrian walked forward , slow ,controlled steps .
Elena held her breath .
The distance between him and the car grew shorter .
Ten meters .
Five .
Three .
Suddenly the engine roared louder .
The car sped away .
Tires screeched against the pavement as it disappeared into the night . Adrian stopped and watched it go . Elena felt a cold wave pass through her chest .
Whoever sat inside that car did not want to be seen and they reacted the moment Adrian approached .
Adrian returned to the building a minute later .
He entered the ballroom again and walked straight toward Elena .
“They left .”
“I saw .”
Adrian’s voice remained calm but firm .
“This confirms your concern .”
Elena nodded slowly .
“Yes .”
Adrian looked toward the crowd .
“Where is your sister now ?”
Elena turned quickly .
Clara stood near the center table speaking with guests . Daniel stood beside her .
She looked composed again .
Almost as if nothing had happened . Elena felt a strange frustration rise .
Why did Clara keep pretending everything was fine ?
Adrian followed her gaze .
“We should not alarm her in front of everyone .”
Elena agreed .
“Not yet .”
The music began to fade as more guests prepared to leave . The celebration slowly moved toward its end .
Daniel raised his voice slightly .
“Thank you everyone for attending . We appreciate your presence tonight .”
Applause followed his words .
People began gathering their belongings and moving toward the exits .
Elena stepped closer to Clara .
“Can we leave now ?”
Clara nodded .
“Yes . I am tired .”
Daniel looked between them .
“You are both leaving together ?”
Elena answered .
“Yes . I will take her home first .”
Daniel smiled slightly .
“That is not necessary . She will come with me .”
Elena paused .
Something about that answer made her uneasy .
Of course Clara would go with her husband . That was normal .
Yet the fear from earlier still lingered in Elena’s mind .
Clara spoke softly .
“It is alright , Elena . I will be fine .”
Elena studied her sister’s face .
“Are you sure ?”
“Yes .”
Daniel placed a gentle hand on Clara’s back .
“I will take care of her .”
Elena hesitated .
Her instinct told her not to leave Clara alone tonight .
But she could not argue without raising suspicion in front of others .
“Call me when you reach home .”
Clara nodded .
“I will .”
Adrian stepped closer .
“I will have security escort your car .”
Elena looked at him .
“That is not necessary .”
“It is .”
His tone left no room for argument .
Elena gave a small nod , “Alright .”
Clara leaned closer and whispered softly .
“Do not worry . I will see you tomorrow .”
Elena forced a smile .
“Tomorrow .”
The sisters shared a brief embrace .
Then Clara turned and walked away with Daniel toward the exit . Elena stood still for a moment .
Watching them leave .
A strange feeling settled in her chest . Uneasy . Heavy . As if something important slipped out of her reach .
Adrian’s voice pulled her back .
“Your car is ready .”
Elena nodded and followed him toward the hotel entrance .
Outside the night air felt cooler , a security guard opened the door of her car . Elena stepped inside .
Before closing the door she looked back toward the street .
The black car was gone but the memory of it remained .
Watching .
Waiting .
The drive home felt longer than usual .
Streetlights passed one after another as the car moved through the quiet roads . Elena leaned back against the seat . Her mind replayed every moment of the evening .
Clara’s fear .
The messages .
The man at the bar .
The black car .
None of it felt like coincidence .
She reached into her purse and touched the flash drive again .
Still there .
Still safe .
Her phone rested in her other hand as she waited for Clara’s call .
Minutes passed .
Then the car stopped in front of her apartment building .
The driver stepped out and opened her door .
“We have arrived .”
Elena stepped out slowly .
“Thank you .”
The car remained parked for a moment before driving away . Elena stood alone in front of the building .
She looked around the street .
Quiet .
Empty .
No black car .
No strangers .
Still something felt wrong .
She walked inside the building and climbed the stairs to her apartment . Inside the small space everything looked the same as she left it earlier .
Familiar . Safe .
She locked the door behind her and placed her purse on the table . Silence filled the room .
Elena removed her shoes and walked toward the window .
From her apartment she could see part of the street below .
Nothing unusual .
She checked her phone again .
No message . No call from Clara .
Elena frowned .
She sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the screen . Clara promised to call .
Why had she not called yet ?
Maybe they were still driving . Maybe traffic slowed them down .
Elena tried to stay calm .
She placed the phone beside her and leaned back .
Minutes passed .
Ten .
Fifteen .
Still nothing .
The unease inside her grew stronger .
Finally she picked up the phone and dialed Clara’s number .
The call rang .
Once .
Twice .
Three times .
No answer .
Elena sat up straight .
“Pick up .”
The call continued ringing , then it stopped .
No answer .
Elena tried again immediately but this time the call went straight to voicemail .
Her chest tightened .
“Clara .”
She stood quickly and walked across the room .
Something was wrong , her instincts screamed it clearly now .
She grabbed her purse again and pulled out the flash drive . She stared at it for a second .
Then placed it back inside carefully .
Her phone rang suddenly .
Elena turned sharply .
Clara’s name appeared on the screen . Relief flooded through her instantly .
She answered quickly .
“Clara . Where are you ?”
No response , only faint static filled the line .
“Clara ? Can you hear me ?”
A soft sound came through the phone .
Breathing .
Uneven .
Fearful .
“Elena .”
Clara’s voice came through weakly .
“Elena , listen to me .”
Elena’s heart pounded .
“What happened ? Where are you ?”
“They know .”
“I know . You told me . Stay calm . Tell me where you are .”
Clara’s voice shook .
“No . You do not understand . They know everything .”
“Who knows ?”
“The people behind the transfers .”
Elena pressed the phone tighter against her ear .
“Where are you right now ?”
Clara’s breathing grew faster .
“In the car .”
“With Daniel ?”
“Yes .”
“Then you are safe .”
Silence .
Then Clara spoke again .
“No .”
Elena froze .
“What do you mean ?”
“I think someone is following us .”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat .
“Describe the car .”
“Black sedan .”
Elena’s grip tightened around the phone .
“The same one from earlier ?”
“Yes .”
Elena moved toward the window quickly and looked down at the empty street .
“Stay on the line .”
Clara’s voice dropped lower .
“They have been behind us since we left the hotel .”
“Tell Daniel .”
“I tried . He said I am imagining things .”
Elena clenched her jaw .
“Put him on the phone .”
“I cannot .”
“Why not ?”
A sudden loud noise echoed through the call .
Tires screeching .
Clara gasped .
“Elena !”
“What happened ?”
“They are getting closer !”
Elena felt panic rise in her chest .
“Where are you ? Tell me your location !”
“I do not know the exact road !”
Another loud sound filled the line .
A sharp turn .
Then Clara’s voice again .
“They are trying to block us !”
Elena’s voice shook now .
“Stay calm ! Stay calm !”
A deep crash exploded through the phone .
Metal hitting metal , glass shattering , the line filled with noise . Then silence .
“Elena ?”
A faint voice returned .
Not Clara .
A man’s voice .
Cold . Controlled .
“You should not have answered this call .”
Elena’s blood ran cold .
“Who is this ?”
There was only silence on the other end .
Then the line disconnected .
