CHAPTER 13 Upon entering, the first thing that struck them was the earthy smell of the air -- a strong odor that lingered like the humidity of the summer day. The smell was so thick, so physical, that Little Joe had to hold back from gagging. The area they entered was a small hallway, but from here their jittery flashlights could make out the large opening of the church starting just ahead about 15 feet from them.
