“What is this bullshit about having no social security number?” The man Lou’s face was red, so angry was he. “Here I am wasting my time on some goddamned illegal immigrant. Mandy!” He yelled and the older saleswoman came running. “Get this stupid chick out of here before I lose it.” He jumped up and disappeared to the back, still grumbling.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but you’ll have to leave.” The older woman had a pained look on her face, but her tone was firm.
“Please, I can do anything you need—sweep, clean, anything—if you’ll just give me a chance.” Several customers in line were staring at Lina, but at this point she was too desperate to care. “I—I have nothing to eat and no money and my family has disappeared and—”
