Chapter 23Lina
Lina’s spirit soared when she first spied Emery, but upon seeing that Emery wasn’t alone she refrained from asking all the questions that burned on her tongue. She greeted her and the other woman, who introduced herself as Emery’s mother, Beth. Her mother shared Emery’s dark hair, but with streaks of grey peeking through. There was nothing unique about Beth’s eyes, though. They were a simple brown, lacking the golden flecks that were so distinctive in Emery’s.
They exchanged a few polite words before, at their request, Lina joined them in the automobile they came in. And off they drove. But by the time Mrs. Caswell maneuvered the vehicle into a driveway next to the Cheap, Lina was as uncertain about what year she was in as she’d been all along.
