We were a couple of hours into doing our work when I decided to take a break. My eyes were unfocused and the words were starting to blur a bit. I took the opportunity to look and see the time, and I was shocked to see just how long we were working. I grew nervous because mom wasn’t home yet. I had a thousand different scenarios going through my head at what might have happened. But before I worked myself up too much, I excused myself, so I could go call her and find out myself.
I dialed her number and waited for her to answer. The longer the phone rings, the more dread set into my body. The moment the call connected I released a big breath as I relaxed slightly.
