Chapter 9, Cormac

724 Words
Before I went to sleep, I mulled over the friendship that had grown between Avva and I.  She was far from the insipid princess I had imagined her to be upon our first meeting.  She was a capable soldier, to my utter surprise.  She was a fine teacher, and took direction with grace.  And she handled assholes with short shrift.  I drifted off with a smile on my face, trying not to think of her perfect ass. I was awoken by screams. Screams of terror pierced my consciousness.  I went from sleep to my senses being on high alert in a split second.  It was Avva.  I jumped out of bed to go after her, only to find her thrashing in terror in her own bed, and instinct took over.  She was having a horrific nightmare.  I imagined a human would simply try to wake her up, but I scooped her up and cradled her, trying to calm her, and sat us back down on my bed.  She was so small, perhaps not by human standards, but certainly by Drache ones.  A few of the other soldiers had come running as well, but still, I held her close, stroking her back and whispering calming words.  It didn’t take long for the screams and thrashing to cease.  The others dispersed back to their beds, save Mauricio.  He did nothing to mute the malice in his glare.  Without thinking, I bared my fangs at him in wordless threat.  MINE, the action said, even though that could never be.  He melted into the darkness, but I would keep one eye on him at all times.  He was more of a threat than I had originally thought. Avva had calmed without waking, but I couldn’t bring myself to put her back in her bed.  I pressed my lips to her forehead, and held her even tighter.  I would protect her from whatever was chasing her in her dreams, from the dark and from any creature or human, including her own father if need be.  But mostly, I would protect her from that serpent, Mauricio. Still, I was reluctant to put her back to bed.  I relished the feel of her body pressed against mine, and so did my c**k.  But I had to control those feelings.  Whatever I felt for this human, she was a princess.  With responsibilities.  But this night, I would use the excuse of her night terrors, and pull her alongside me in my bed.  I brushed her lips with mine, and tucked her in next to me, spooning her.  She sighed deeply, and snuggled in, wiggling her ass just enough to cue a serious conversation with my d**k.   It didn’t listen, at least until I fell asleep. I had dozed off when Avva rolled in her sleep to face me.  She threw her arm over me and pulled herself closer.  All of me stiffened when I realized I could see the silhouette of her breasts squished into my chest.  And that was when she woke.  I shifted my legs to hide my arousal. At first she was confused.  Her nose was level with my sternum, and she couldn’t figure out what she was looking at.  Her eyes traveled slowly upwards and locked with mine.  I had expected her to scream, but instead she smiled sleepily, tucked her head under my chin, and pulled herself in yet closer.  I was shocked, but held her even tighter nonetheless.  I drifted off into a light sleep. It was just before the morning horn was due to blow that she stirred.  She raised her eyes to me again, briefly pressed her lips to mine and slipped back to her own bed.  The kiss surprised me, but I was glad of it.  There weren’t words for just how empty the bed felt without her in it.  We spent our last few minutes before rising looking into each other’s eyes across the gulf that separated our beds.  When the horn blew, she sat up and wordlessly handed me a mug of kaffee.  When I sipped, I realized she had brewed it extra strong.  Neither one of us had gotten much sleep, but I wouldn’t have it any different.  But now, it was time to face the day, and the implications of a human princess sharing a bed with a Drache warrior.
