I could have told Avva that she was pregnant, but I chose to let her figure it out herself.  I didn’t want to rob her of the joy of telling me herself.  I had no personal experience, but I knew that that was a surprise that all females liked to give. We had ridden hard and steady to make it back to the border before Melkree sent out troops.   “You cut it close,” he declared.  “Cormac, you and Avva are wanted at the palace, but first, rest.  I’ll send a messenger ahead of you to let the king know that you are safe.” Avva and I retreated to our tent, pulled our cots together, and passed out asleep as if dead.  A few hours later, we were roused by Henry. “The king’ll be getting impatient.  You will make sure to tell him I’ll not stand in the way?,” he asked. Avva looked askance at him.
