Chapter 1: First Sight

753 Words
"Watch it b***h!" snarked a senior girl who had just went out of her way to bump into me. I bit my tongue as I picked up the text I had dropped, narrowly having my hand stepped on by other students in the hall. Everyday for the last two years had started and ended like this. I was either bullied mercilessly, or invisible, nothing in between. I sped walked the hall toward my AP biology class, with my green eyes trained to the ground. When I arrived I held back while other kids pushed on ahead of me. Suddenly I had the sensation I was being watched. I turned my eyes up and scanned the empty corridor. At the very end, staring back at me was a guy I had never seen. He was tall with a wide muscular frame, and a handsomely calculating expression. His face promised danger. Dressed out in solid black with jet dark hair and whitish blue eyes that pierced through me assessingly. My cheeks flushed and I averted my gaze briefly before looking back up towards him, but he was no longer there. I stood a moment longer waiting for him to show his face again before I started to feel stupid. We didn't know each other and obviously he wasn't staring after me. Classes came and went throughout the morning and at lunch time I headed to my locker to grab my packed lunch. All the kids hung out in the cafeteria which I avoided with all means necessary. Cafeterias equaled jocks throwing food across the room, and bitchy girls dumping sauerkraut in my hair with feigned apologies and giggles. I'd been bounced around the foster system since age two following the death of my biological parents. They were involved in a fatal car crash, and I had no memories or photos of them. Following my daily routine of human avoidance, I took my lunch outside to the tree lined benches, flopping down onto the furthest one and biting into my ham and cheese sandwich. It felt like a lead weight and my stomach rolled with nausea as I fought the urge to spit it out. Come to think of it breakfast today felt similar. I shrugged the disgust off and mechanically took another bite. My chewing slowed as the hairs on my arms pricked in an odd feeling of warning. That same sensation of being watched slithered along my spine interrupting my solitude, and I sat up taller eyeing the tree line behind me. Nobody obvious was there. Yet I couldn't shake the feeling I wasn't exactly alone. I dropped my sandwich back in the bag and rose slowly to my feet. Walking cautiously to the shrouded trees, I peered into the shadows and held my breath. For a brief moment I thought I saw a faint silhouette slide behind a trunk, but after a few heartbeats I realized no one was there, it was just my mind f*****g me yet again today. I spent the rest of the afternoon lost in space picturing that guys face from this morning. I don't think I've ever seen him before today, was he new at school? And why was he staring at me like that? The thought of seeing him again brought heat to the back of my neck and I shuddered, glancing around to see of anyone noticed . For once I was glad to be invisible. Before I knew it the school bell blared and hoots and hollers filled the room as kids jumped to their feet and flooded out into the hall. I shifted after them oblivious to the sneers and laughs as I kept an eye out for the mystery guy. It was obvious he wasn't the kind of guy who would give me a second look but apparently I was a glutton for insult. It's not like I was totally unfortunate looking, I'm slender, lacking vivacious curves, with emerald green eyes and ashy brown hair to my mid back, all in all if you asked me personally I'd say at best I'm plain. I arrived home disappointed. I never saw him in the halls or outside the school. However, that night a feeling of being watched (that was becoming a little too familiar now) crept up as I laid in bed. I sat up and peered out my window. I stared into the darkness with my heart thundering. I couldn't see anything, but somehow I knew I was being stared right back at…
