We strode down the hall at a clipped pace. When I'd told Torri my idea to pull pranks on Calvin, she was all too ready. Sporting an oversized black sweater with the hood up, black matchstick jeggings, and matching black combat boots, she looked every part the undercover ninja.
I could barely muffle my laughter as I watched her cartwheel into a somersault, peek around the corner, then proceed to throw a bunch of secret hand signals at me that only she knew. I gave her a playful shove, and she tugged me along into the library behind her.
"You know, just cause you're too lame to dress incognito doesn't mean you can't at least follow the signals" she stated irritability.
"Whatever," I smirked at her, "what's in the library?" I gestured with my hand towards the towering shelves lining each wall floor to ceiling.
"Spells of course!" She grinned at me and waggled her fingers.
"Oh, of course, I just thought we'd be fighting him with the Grapes of Wrath.." I deadpanned.
She stared at me in confusion, clearly not grasping my joke of mortal literature.
"Nevermind, what kind of spells are in here? Nothing that's going to hurt him right?" I asked the obvious, although the look of vengeance on her face as she scanned the columns had me suddenly a bit apprehensive about this whole idea.
"Nah, just his ego…" she trailed off, "aha!" Tor exclaimed, pulling down a heavy tome wrapped in some browning beige leather. It almost looked like skin..oh God.
"Torri…tell me that isn't someone's f*****g hide..!" I whisper shouted, after all this was the library.
"It's a spellbook, of course it is! Woah, do you want me to grab you some blood? You're looking a bit pale there girly" she eyed me over with concern.
"I'm fine, but you can flip the pages" I shuddered.
She shrugged and began flitting through the book, mumbling under her breath about the injustice of spells not being accessible on the internet .
"Oh my God yes" she cackled, pointing to an excerpt on the page before her.
It was a shedding spell meant to cause the fur of the shifter to fall out completely leaving a bald wrinkly creature in its place.
"You sure this is the one?" I asked with a grin tugging the side of my mouth up, an image of a wet cat in my mind.
"He's the Alpha of his pack, and so damn full of himself, especially his shifted form, it's absolutely perfect" she Beamed, and whipped out a notepad. Jotting down the ingredients and incantation with the speed of revenge driving her pen tip.
My leg began bouncing in anticipation, and a giddy excitement rolled through my gut.
"Let's find one more!" I edged closer, beckoning her to flip the page. I still was not ready to touch that thing with my bare hands…
"OK let's see…" she drawled, scanning through a few more pages before drawing up short. "This is it! It's a binding spell! When he greets another wolf his snout will bind to their asshole like superglue."
Before I could fall apart in hysterics she was halfway done writing it out. Suddenly another idea hit me, and I grabbed her wrist to get her attention. My eyes met hers with a devious glint.
"Twyla." I announced with finality.
She squealed like a banshee, clapping her hands before whirling back to the torturous book before her.
"Whatever we do to her we can't tell anybody, not even Blake", she stated seriously, "if she finds out it was us we're so done for."
I nodded in understanding, frowning down at the titles as she turned each page. Hair loss, hair growth, power blocking spells, constipation, diarrhoea, hmm..nothing here seemed good enough. Then I saw it. My hand touched the creepy book for the first time as I slammed my finger down on the title. "This. One hundred percent this." I decided.
She took one look, and sat back slowly giving me a conflicted expression.
"Are you absolutely sure? Repulsion spells aren't exactly a small curse to place on somebody. They repel people so badly that not even Sam in the infirmary would cast a counterspell for her if she asked him for help…" she said truthfully. It didn't escape my notice however that her pen was poised for action, and I had to appreciate her commitment to debauchery.
"Well, you said she's in line for the council did you not? And isn't it only the best of the best who earn a spot amongst them? I say we see what she's made of, if she's that good she'll undo the spell herself." I shrugged with a challenge in my eye.
Torri eyed me for only a beat before she was jotting down the spell, head shaking in disbelief despite the s**t eating grin she wore.
Yup, this was the start of a beautiful friendship!
I didn't tell her however, that I only really wanted to repel one person from Twyla in particular…a handsome asshole I couldn't seem to avoid thinking about…the rest of the world was simply collateral damage. But she didn't ask, so I didn't tell.
After she finished tucking her notes away, and the book had been turned to its place near the top of the central bookcase, we headed off to find the necessary supplies for the spells. Torri led us to the academy greenhouse first.
"I told Professor Altair there was a bear shifter having cubs in the crop field", she snickered, "you should've seen his face, it was classic. I don't think he realises shifters can't give birth in their shifted form. Anyway we have about ten minutes before he gets back here and drags us to Valhmers office, watch the door, I'll grab the shit."
My jaw dropped at the news of her distraction. "Whatever happened to pulling the fire alarm like a normal delinquent?!" I gawked.
"Really? Half the kids in this school do fire magic on the daily, you aren't going to find a fire alarm in this place" she rolled her eyes like that was an obviously dumb question.
I watched with rapt attention as she flew from shelf to shelf, grabbing vials, checking labels, and pulling random leaves off plants I'd never seen before, and stuffing them into her bra. I raised an eyebrow, and glanced at her side bag, yet said nothing. She was a woman on a mission, and who was I to judge her methods?
A door slammed at the entrance to the building, and more than one fuming voice carried our way. We met each other's eyes in panic, and she slid one more vial into her boob holster before shoving me towards the back door.
We slammed through it out into the back fields, and took off running for the dorm buildings like there was fire under our asses. Once we'd made it safely inside the commons room, we fell apart in hysterics. We were both panting, and holding each other up for support.
A chorus of laughter broke the moment, and I glanced up to see a group of guys and girls lounging across the couches all touching and petting one another like some kind of frigid public orgy. Torri's gaze fell on them as well, and her smile instantly dropped as she averted her eyes quickly away.
"Let's get going" she mumbled, her mood clearly being soured by the group across the room.
"Hey Tor! Where'd you run off to last night sugar… and what the hell are you wearing?" One of the guys called to her loudly, getting to his feet. He was tall, pushing six and a half feet easily. His grey shirt strained against the obvious bodybuilder physique he was sporting, and he sauntered towards us like he owned the room. He was handsome with green eyes, and dirty blonde hair tied at the base of his neck. A few of the girls behind him snickered to one another, whispering behind their hands while sizing us up with dirty looks.
"Calvin" Torri said in a curt greeting.
"Hey! It's so great to meet you, I'm Ava Torris new roommate." I said with my best movie star smile.
Her eyes raked towards me in an obvious 'what the f**k are you doing' way.
"Cool, so Tor-" he began.
"Was just about to show me to Valhmers office," I interrupted, "she asked to see us asap, so we'd best be going, great hair by the way!" I rushed out, grasping Torri's elbow, and wheeling her towards the elevators. Apparently Tor wasn't lying when she said he was egotistical, I glanced back briefly to see him shaking out his ponytail, and running a wide hand through the end of his locks.
When the elevator doors sealed shut she whirled on me incredulously, "what the hell was that Ava??"
"That was me saving you from that painfully awkward conversation, besides he forgot all about it the second I complimented his dumb hair, did you see him stroking it when we walked away?"
"No, but I've seen him do it enough times I can picture it with perfect accuracy" she smirked.
"Yeah, well I don't think he'll be so cocky when he's looking like a hairless sphynx tomorrow" I said with a pointed stare to her t**s.
She let out a squeal, and shook her boobs at me just as the elevator doors opened and we came face to face with Professor Felch.
A mask of barely concealed disgust painted his face as he looked between the two of us with a slight shake of his head. "Think I'll take the stairs" he said loudly, striding away from us.
I glanced at Torri whose ivory face was burning crimson which I'm sure matched my own.
"I can't stand that guy" she muttered, steering me towards our room on the fifth floor.
"Me either, I have him for H.O.M, and so far he's chewed me out every class." I pouted.
"No surprise there" Torri rolled her eyes.
"Do the professors stay in the same building as the students?" I questioned her.
"No, they have Staff accommodations near the east lake behind the Hub."
The Hub was the centre point of all social congregations, school dances, assemblies, and what have you, from what I'd recently learned.
"Wonder what he was doing in the dorms" I said quizzically.
Torri simply shrugged as she pushed her way into our room.
It didn't escape my notice he had been on our floor either, hopefully he didn't make a habit of that, seeing him Monday to Friday was s**t enough without running into him on the weekends too.
