He wanted me out of his life? Great, I could do that. The reality is I don't even know him! He was a five minute blip of asshole on my f*****g radar.
I slammed my hairbrush down, and took a deep breath, studying myself in the mirror while a broken rendition of 'Adele' echoed out from the shower.
My spat with Jet had been pushing its ugly way to the front of my thoughts since it happened. I had my first day of classes today, and I refused to let it sour my mood. Everyone I'd met had been welcoming so far, I genuinely could not figure out why he seemed to hate me so much.
"Are you almost done? I don't want to be late for my first class Tor!" I shouted at my personal karaoke machine.
"Hold on just one chorus left!-never mind I'll find…!"
I rolled my eyes, and headed out to scan my schedule for the eighth time.
First class, History of Magic (HOM) with Professor Felch. Magic? Well that should be interesting. History? Er, not so much.
Done waiting around for Torri, I tossed my bag over my shoulder, and made a move to head out the door when suddenly she strode past me to open it.
"Come on, we can't be late!" She singsonged, magically dressed to the nines with her chestnut hair cascading down her back in sleek dry waves.
I followed after her with my jaw agape, now that was magic if I'd ever seen any.
We made a brief cafeteria stop for coffee and blood boxes. As id recently learned, vampires of this day and age drank prepackaged donor blood from other orders. As opposed to the opposite of attacking humans. Something to do with disease avoidance, and curbing our more wild instincts to protect the concealment of the paranormal world. The cafeteria stocked juice style boxes of the stuff, and we were encouraged to drink one with each meal to keep our order running optimally. If anyone had suggested I drink blood a year ago I'd have hurled on the spot, but ever since my first day when I'd drunk it and ignited my transition, I couldn't imagine not drinking it. I needed it to live like my old system had needed water. Besides, it was f*****g delicious if I was being honest...
I'd made my way to the double wood doors of my HOM class, and pushed my way in.
I found an empty desk at the back, and pulled out the chair. I tucked my black tartan skirt underneath myself, and sank down to sit. Instead of the chair, my ass hit the concrete ground, and I let out a yelp.
A chorus of stifled giggles erupted from a group of girls sitting a few rows up from me. One of them, an icy blonde with cold blue eyes met mine with a teasing shrug, "Oops" she feigned an apology.
I gave a tight smile, and sat down in my chair without looking around myself. My cheeks heated and I kicked myself internally for it.
The laughter died off, and everyone whirled forward as a tall man strode in. He had a grey military cropped hairdo with eyes like gun metal that surveyed the kids before him.
"That's enough Twyla. Welcome to History of Magic Miss Venus, my name is Professor Felch and you will address me as sir" he said, settling his stone gaze on me. "You'll pick up where the rest of the class is, and catch up in your free time. I expect full knowledge of the previously covered material come next week…"
I nodded, "yes sir."
Great, first period, and my professor is a grade A hard ass. He expects me to catch up on six months of lessons in a goddamn week?! Shoot me. At least I only have this one class before lunch.
Turning back to the front he began speaking to the rest of the class.
"In your last period we discussed the civil war of the Fae, or as it is also known, the Great Fairy g******e. As you know, DayBreak Academy houses 4 species of supernatural. The witch, the shifter, the mage, and the Shtriga, known to you all as Vampires. However, what many of you probably do not know, is that prior to the war of the Fae, DayBreak was a place of education for them as well."
Murmurs broke out around the room.
"If anyone has a question, please ask it." Mr. Felch said between clenched teeth. The murmurs stopped as sudden as they started, and a guy with dishellveled spikes of snow colored hair raised his hand casually.
"Lex?" Felch probed.
"Yeah. You said the war was a total g******e, but isn't there rumors of surviving half breeds?"
Mr. Felch glanced my way briefly before turning back to answer Lex. "There is just that. Yes, rumours. However, until evidence proves otherwise, it'd be wise to stick with known facts…and stop rumours from further spreading should they bring unwarranted acts of hate." He looked back at me, and stared pointedly for 3 beats, making me squirm uncomfortably in my seat.
An ominous chill ran down my arms, and I subconsciously rubbed my sleeves against them. I glanced around the room, but nobody else seemed to notice the chill.
The rest of the class droned on with Mr.Felch explaining the power of the Fae people. According to history they were the strongest yet peaceful of all supernaturals, their power unmatchable by even the strongest mage. If a Fae did manage to be defeated, it was said their essence could be harnessed, and the power wielded by whoever defeated them.
Despite my disinterest in history, I found myself on the edge of my seat hanging onto each word.
For the Fae being referred to as such a peaceful people, it seemed unworldly they would be so powerful. Maybe that's why. 'Cause shouldn't Great power be held only by those unwilling to abuse it?
The bell broke me from my reverie, and I gathered up my books in a hurry. I told Torri I'd meet her for lunch.
"New girl" came a deep, velvet voice from behind me.
I snapped my head up from clipping my bag shut to see the white haired guy standing before me.
"Ava" I offered.
"Avaaa" he drawled with a slight accent I couldn't place.
His onyx eyes raking my figure with a tempting smirk.
I choked on air, and stammered out "Um... Ok I'm going to go now...?" I let the statement end questioningly though my feet didn't budge.
"Lex." He winked at me.
Before I could process the random exchange, the snooty blonde from earlier, Twyla, strode past, and announced to her group, but loudly enough for me to hear "wow day one, and already showing what a slut she is."
I shook my head in disgust. Ugh! What a b***h!
I spun back to announce my leave, but when I turned around, Lex and I were face to face. His stark white hair contrasted against his pale skin, and hard features. The obsidian pools of his eyes promised he was no good, and I believed them...unfamiliar heat stirred in my low core, and my thighs pressed together of their own volition.
Lex leaned in so his mouth was a mere inch from mine "she may not like that, but I sure as f**k do." He whispered, and snaked his tongue seductively along his pointed canines.
My shallow breaths came faster as I watched his tongue glide. I found myself leaning every so slightly forward to close the inch between our mouths. I screamed at myself to stop, but I couldn't keep from moving into him. Every molecule of my being wanted to taste the danger in him, grasp that alabaster hair between my fingers, and melt into his body.
Yet before our lips met, he pulled up to his full height, chuckling low in his throat.
"Careful Ava, I bite." He mocked like he knew exactly where my mind had been, and with that, sauntered out of the room.
My head cleared, and I pressed a sweaty palm to it.
What the f**k was that…?
