Chapter Eight

1070 Words
“What is your name?” I asked as I got up from the seat. From where she was standing, her eyes roamed over my frame as I walked towards her. Her lips parted slightly and for a brief moment, she bit the corner of her bottom lip with her teeth. She could pretend to want me out of her presence as much as she wanted but I recognized the look in her eyes and I knew what it meant. “Why do you ask?” she said, folding her arms in front of her. “I would like to know who I am suing when I end up with an infection in my wound.” She scoffed but before she could hide it away, a giggle followed. Jackpot! “You can’t be f*****g serious. There is no way….” she started to say, but I had completely closed the distance between us so that we were now less than a foot apart. She attempted to sidestep me but I planted my arm firmly beside her so that she was between me and the wall. The bulb above us flickered, causing her eyelashes to flutter. I watched her breasts rise and fall with each breath she took and shook my head at the unorthodox thoughts that crossed my mind. “What are you doing?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. “I don’t know,” I said. “You’re very intoxicating.” She rolled her eyes for the umpteenth time and was about to turn away when abruptly, I pulled her by the waist, embracing her firmly against the wall. I paused for a moment, giving her a chance to push me away or fight this but she didn’t. Instead, she leans into me while her right hand folds around my wrist, and a soft gasp escapes her lips. Looking into her eyes, my lips hovered over hers and my heart beat faster, anticipating what she would taste like. My arms tightened around her and she pushed her body further into me so that my right leg now rested between hers. Slowly, I began to lower my head to close the gap between us and I watched as she closed her eyes and raised her head, attempting to meet me in the middle. This was happening. Somebody cleared their throat and just like that, the bubble of the moment we created burst. She reacted first by shoving me with both hands and causing me to stumble backwards. I regained my balance with impressive skill, considering how hazy my head felt, and faced the direction of our intruder. The other bartender was standing just a few feet away with a smirk on his face. He opened his mouth to say something but swallowed it, choosing only to look at his colleague with a raised eyebrow. “Uhm, I need your help outside, Olivia. A large group just settled into a booth,” he said. “I’ll be there in a minute,” she said. She was attempting to hide her flushed cheeks and crumpled exterior but it was too late. I had seen how excited she had gotten and so did this guy. “Sure thing,” he said with an even wider smirk before walking away and she clenched her jaw. ‘'Olivia…” I said to myself. Olivia didn’t wait for anything else to be said. She pulled me slowly but surely towards the exit as though she wanted to be done with me as soon as possible. *** A crisp cold breeze blew through the night air, chilling me to the bone in a way that was much different than how I’d felt inside of the bar. Headlights illuminated the street, and I walked behind Olivia as she extended her arm out trying to wave down a cab for me. Each cab blew past us without stopping, leaving us standing on the street corner waiting. I didn’t mind though; I was not in a hurry to leave her. She, on the other hand, seemed like she could not wait to be rid of me. I had to admit that it was a new experience for me, to be around someone who was so hell-bent on sending me off. Most people tended to want to be around me even when I made it clear I did not care for their presence. “Find me a cab, and I’ll be on my way,” I said. As I tried to detach myself from her hold, I staggered on my feet and she allowed me to wrap my arms around her shoulder to prop myself up. It was a nice gesture that I enjoyed so I settled into her hold. Yet, I did not want her to think that I was attaching myself to her. “I promise you’ll never see me again,” I said. “I really hope so,” she said dryly. Another set of headlights came through. “Get ready,” she said. “Ready for…” Before I could finish, she had me moving out into the street, forcing the car to halt. The driver got out, yelling obscenities. She reached into the pocket of my coat and grabbed my wallet like a trained bartender who hated not getting paid by drunkards and ransacked it. I had no idea what she expected to find in there but she appeared surprised to see the sizable cash I carried in my wallet. I was always prepared. She took out a twenty-dollar bill and handed it to the ranting taxi driver, who was almost red from screaming. “This man needs to go to the hospital,” she said with a fake apologetic look and a pout I knew made all men weak. “He’ll pay you more if you can get him there in less than ten minutes.” Her words registered in my head and I began to protest. “No! I just want to go home!” I grabbed my wallet, stood on my own two feet, and staggered into the car, reciting my address to the driver. When I looked back towards Olivia, she had turned away and walked back into the bar without as much as a goodbye. “Olivia,” I muttered under my breath as the cab drove away and I watched the bar disappear from my field of vision.
