Callan wished he could jump up and cover Zara's mouth to stop her from babbling. What if Mr. Dexter got upset with Mercy because of this? She was always causing trouble for him!
"Zara, shut your mouth! Why are you saying this now?" Callan scolded, his face stern.
Zara immediately looked hurt, her eyes reddening as she pretended to speak softly, "Dad, I'm just worried that if Mr. Dexter finds out something later, he might take it out on our family. I'm doing this for Mercy, for our family's sake. Besides, shouldn't we be honest about these things early on? And I believe if Dexter truly likes Mercy, he won't care about her past."
Callan, hearing this, found some sense in her words and momentarily didn't argue back.
