MY BROKEN RULE

684 Words
CHAPTER ONE:THE RULE Noir smelled like it always did —vanilla smoke, spilled champagne,a bassline that lived somewhere under my ribs.Chloe was already three drinks deep at our usual corner table,Watching me the way she always did on Fridays, half amused, half worried, like she was waiting to see who i’d pick tonight. You have a type, you know,”she shouted over the music."Tall, brooding allergic to eye contact the next morning “. "I have a system,”I corrected her."systems work.” That was the whole philosophy, really.one night,No numbers,no last name that mattered, gone before the city woke up enough to ask questions.l’d built it at seventeen,in the kitchen that smelled like my mother’s perfume and my father’s guilt, and l’d never once needed to rebuild it.love was a slow-motion car crash people signed up for voluntarily.l’d rather choose my own collisions. I saw him before he saw me.that should have been my first warning usually it was the other way around, usually I was the one doing the choosing.he was leaning against the bar with the stillness of a man who’d never had to try for anyone’s attention in his life, gold light catching the line of his jaw, when his eyes finally found mine across the room,I felt it land somewhere lower than my stomach. "Bella”,l told him, when he crossed the floor without hurrying, like he already knew l’d be worth the walk. “Julian”,he said and offered nothing else-no company name,no context, just the single word, lithe understood the rules of the game without needing them explained. I liked that.l liked it more than I wanted to. We didn’t talk much after that.Talking wasn’t really the point. He didn’t rush. That was the first thing that undid me.Every man before him had a rhythm they wanted me to keep up with-hands too fast, mouth too eager, like the night was a race with a finish line.julian moved like he had all the time in the world and nowhere else he‘d rather spend it.ln the cab ,in the elevator,in the low gold light of his hotel room,he took his time in a way that made my usual armor feel useless. His hand slid down the curve of my waist, then down to under my short dress, slow, deliberate, I forgot how to breathe.i‘ve done this before,l ’ve done it so many times l stopped keeping score. But nothing about this felt like the others. He looked at me like I was a question he actually wanted the answer to,not just a body to pass the night with, and for the first time in longer than I could admit,l let someone look. “Tell me if you want me to stop,”he said once, quietly ,against my ear,and something about the fact that he asked at all-that meant it-made the last of my usual detachment come loose. I didn’t want him to stop. His mouth found the curve of my neck, unhurried, and every rule l’d built my life on went quiet for the first time in years.l told myself it was just another night, the way I told myself everytime.l almost believed it,right up until he pulled back to look at me again before he did anything else, like he needed to see my face not just have my body -and something in my chest cracked open that I didn’t have a name for yet. Later, tangled in sheets that weren’t mine,in a room that l’d forget the number by morning,l lay with my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat slow, and thought, with something close to panic:l ‘m going to remember this one. By the time the city outside started to hum with early traffic,I already knew-somewhere under the part of me that refused to admit it-that this wasn’t going to be like the others.that night I will never forget.Whatever it was,it wasn’t nothing. I left before he woke up.that was the rule.l stood in the elevator with my shoes in my hand and told my reflection it didn’t mean anything, the same lie I always told, except this time some small, trencherous part of me didn’t believe it. ——————-
