Alyssa’s heart raced as the forest’s darkness pressed in around them. Kade’s hand was firm on her wrist, guiding her through the woods with urgent steps. The distant howls had stopped, but the tension in the air was palpable, thick with the promise of danger.
“Why are we running?” Alyssa whispered, her breath coming in short bursts as they moved through the underbrush. “Who was that man—Lucian? And what did he mean by—‘getting close to him could get you killed’?”
Kade didn’t answer immediately, his gaze constantly scanning the shadows. The moon above them bathed the forest in an eerie glow, but it did little to calm the growing unease in Alyssa’s chest.
“Lucian is part of the pack,” Kade said finally, his voice low and filled with a quiet anger. “He’s not just any pack member. He’s one of the Alpha’s enforcers. And the fact that he knows about you…” His voice trailed off as he pulled Alyssa closer to him, as if he could shield her from the very air around them.
Alyssa swallowed hard, trying to absorb everything he was saying. “But what does that mean for me? Why does the pack care about me?”
Kade’s eyes darkened, his jaw tightening as though he were struggling with something. “It’s complicated. You have no idea what your presence here means to them, Alyssa. But I’ll explain everything. Just not yet. Right now, we need to get somewhere safe.”
They pressed on in silence, the woods growing denser as they ventured deeper into the wilderness. Alyssa’s mind raced with the weight of Kade’s words. A pack. Alpha. Enforcers. Her mind kept returning to that cryptic statement—You’re meant to be a queen among wolves.
A queen. It didn’t make sense. She wasn’t some royal figure. She wasn’t a wolf. She was just… Alyssa. The adopted daughter of the Cross family. She had lived a life of privilege, far removed from anything resembling this wild, dangerous world Kade had hinted at.
After what felt like hours, they arrived at a small clearing. A cabin sat at the center, its lights dim and welcoming. It was humble, tucked away in the heart of the forest, and yet it radiated an undeniable sense of security.
Kade led her inside, closing the door behind them with a soft click. The air inside was warmer, though the heaviness still clung to the atmosphere. He motioned for her to sit on the couch while he went to the small kitchen, gathering supplies. Alyssa hesitated but then sank down, her mind still swirling.
Kade returned with a bottle of water and sat beside her. He handed her the bottle but didn’t speak for a long time, as though he was trying to find the right words.
Finally, Alyssa broke the silence. “Kade, what am I to them? Why is the pack so focused on me?”
Kade’s eyes were filled with pain as he met her gaze. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words caught in his throat. He clenched his fists before finally exhaling slowly.
“You’re not just some human caught in the middle of a dangerous world, Alyssa,” Kade said, his voice trembling slightly. “You’re a part of something much bigger than that. Something that’s been hidden from you your entire life.”
Alyssa’s chest tightened. “What are you saying?”
He reached for her hand, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the tension in the air. “Alyssa, you were born into this world—this world of wolves, of packs, of the ancient bloodline. You’re not just a normal human girl. You’re one of us.”
Her pulse quickened as her mind struggled to process his words. “No. That can’t be true. I’m human. I don’t have any connection to wolves.”
Kade’s eyes softened with a mix of regret and determination. “You are part of an ancient prophecy. The Cross family—they weren’t just protecting you from the world; they were protecting you from yourself.”
Alyssa shook her head, a laugh escaping her lips that sounded more like a nervous sob. “This is crazy. This is some kind of joke, right?”
Kade’s grip on her hand tightened. “I wish it were. But it’s not. The pack—the Alpha—he’s been searching for you for years. You were meant to be a queen, Alyssa. To rule alongside him. Your bloodline, your power—it’s why you’re so important.”
Alyssa’s breath hitched as his words settled deep within her chest. She was meant to rule? To lead wolves? It felt impossible.
The room seemed to close in on her, the weight of the truth pressing down on her like a heavy stone. She wanted to deny it, to reject it, but she couldn’t. Something inside her was stirring—something that she had never understood.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore,” she whispered.
Kade’s voice softened, filled with a warmth that contrasted the tension in the air. “I know it’s a lot to take in, Alyssa. But you don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be here. I’ll protect you, no matter what.”
Alyssa’s heart pounded in her chest as she looked at him, the storm of emotions threatening to overwhelm her. There was no turning back now. She was entangled in something far beyond her comprehension—and Kade was the only one who could guide her through it.
And despite the danger, despite the uncertainty, a part of her couldn’t help but feel drawn to him. The connection between them was undeniable, and no matter how much she wanted to push it away, it pulled her closer.
The pack was coming for her. But for the first time in her life, Alyssa wasn’t sure if that was a curse or a blessing.
Kade’s words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Alyssa could hardly breathe, the weight of everything she’d just learned pressing down on her. She glanced at Kade, his face filled with sincerity, and she couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward him. She had known him for only a short time, but already he seemed to be everything she never knew she needed.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Alyssa finally asked, her voice a mixture of anger and hurt. “Why hide it? Why let me live my whole life thinking I was just a normal girl?”
Kade ran a hand through his hair, frustration flickering across his features. “I didn’t have a choice. The Alpha ordered us to keep you in the dark. You weren’t supposed to know about the pack, about your bloodline, until it was safe.”
“Safe from what?” Alyssa demanded. “What could be so dangerous that I had to live a lie?”
Kade’s jaw clenched as he took a deep breath. “Alyssa, the world of wolves is brutal. It’s dangerous. And if the wrong people knew who you were, they would stop at nothing to control you. To use you. There are powers in this world that would do anything to claim you for themselves.”
Alyssa’s stomach twisted in fear, the implications of his words sinking in. She had always known there was something about her that set her apart, but she had never imagined this. A queen among wolves? It sounded like something out of a fairytale, but now, standing here in the middle of the forest with Kade’s intense gaze locked on hers, it felt more real than ever.
“Then why not just tell me the truth? Why didn’t you warn me?” Alyssa asked again, her voice cracking with emotion. “Why let me get dragged into this without knowing anything?”
Kade’s eyes softened, and he moved closer to her, his hand gently brushing the side of her face. “Because I didn’t want you to be afraid. I didn’t want you to hate me for dragging you into this. I wanted to protect you from all the darkness that comes with this life. And, selfishly, I wanted to protect us.”
Alyssa’s heart skipped a beat at the implication in his words. “Us?”
Kade’s lips twitched, as though he was struggling with his own feelings. “I never planned for this to happen. I never meant for you to be a part of my world, but the moment I met you, I knew I couldn’t stay away.”
His hand lingered on her cheek, his thumb gently brushing her skin as his eyes roamed over her face. Alyssa felt a rush of warmth spread through her body. His words were like a promise, an unspoken vow that she didn’t fully understand yet, but one she couldn’t ignore.
“I’m not scared of you, Kade,” she whispered, her voice steady despite the uncertainty she felt inside. “But I am scared of what all of this means. What am I supposed to do with this… this power you’re telling me I have?”
Kade’s expression softened, and for a moment, Alyssa saw a glimpse of the man beneath the rough exterior—the protector, the one who cared for her more than he let on.
“We’ll figure it out together,” he said, his voice a quiet reassurance. “You don’t have to carry this burden alone. I’ll be here every step of the way.”
Alyssa looked into his eyes, the connection between them undeniable, yet laced with confusion and fear. How could she go from being the adopted daughter of a wealthy family to the queen of a pack of wolves? How could she take on such a role when she still didn’t fully understand her own identity?
But in that moment, with Kade standing beside her, she knew she wasn’t alone in this. And maybe that was enough.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp knock echoed through the cabin, making both of them freeze. Alyssa’s breath caught in her throat, and Kade’s posture immediately shifted, his body going rigid as he moved to the door, positioning himself between her and the possible threat.
“Stay here,” Kade ordered quietly, his voice laced with authority.
Alyssa nodded, her heart hammering in her chest. She didn’t know who was at the door, but she had a sinking feeling that whatever was about to happen would change everything.
Kade slowly opened the door, his body blocking her view. Alyssa strained to hear the voices that came next, but all she could catch were the low, rumbling tones of men speaking in hushed voices.
“Is everything alright, Kade?” one of the voices asked. The tone was familiar—Lucian’s.
Kade’s voice came out harsh and clipped. “We don’t have time for this. What do you want?”
Lucian’s laugh echoed through the night air, a sound that sent a chill down Alyssa’s spine. “We want her, Kade. And you know what will happen if you don’t hand her over.”
Alyssa’s blood ran cold at his words. Hand her over? What did they want with her? What had she gotten herself into?
Kade’s voice was low, but his words were filled with menace. “You don’t touch her, Lucian. Not now. Not ever.”
There was a tense silence before Lucian spoke again. “We’ll see about that.”
