Alyssa barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the wolf, its glowing eyes burning into her memory. But more than that, she thought of Kade—the way he had faced the beast without fear, as if they shared some unspoken understanding.
And then there was the question that lingered in her mind: Who was Kade?
The next morning, she stood in front of her mirror, running a brush through her long, dark hair. Her reflection stared back, her features as composed as ever, but beneath the surface, she was anything but calm.
“You’ve handled worse,” she muttered to herself, though the words felt hollow.
She left her room and descended the grand staircase, her heels clicking softly against the polished wood. The estate was quiet, as it often was during the day. Her adoptive mother, Eleanor, had already left for her usual business meetings, leaving Alyssa to her own devices.
Deciding she needed a distraction, Alyssa headed into town. The small shops and cafés of Crescent Pines bustled with life, the scent of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee filling the air.
She was browsing a bookstore when she felt it again—that familiar sensation of being watched. She turned slowly, her heart skipping a beat when she saw him.
Kade stood by the door, his hands in his pockets, his dark jacket open to reveal a simple black t-shirt. His piercing eyes met hers, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to fade.
“You have a habit of showing up unannounced,” she said, her tone light but her pulse racing.
Kade smirked, his lips curving into that maddeningly confident smile. “And you have a habit of wandering into trouble.”
She rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t hide the smile tugging at her lips. “What are you doing here?”
“Checking on you,” he said simply.
“Why?”
His expression softened, and for a moment, she thought he might actually answer. But instead, he said, “Can we talk?”
Alyssa hesitated. Part of her wanted to push him for answers, to demand an explanation for everything. But another part of her—the part that had been drawn to him from the moment they met—wanted to say yes.
“Fine,” she said, slipping the book she was holding back onto the shelf. “Let’s talk.”
They ended up at a quiet café on the edge of town, sitting in a corner booth away from prying eyes. Alyssa watched Kade carefully as he sipped his coffee, his gaze fixed on the table as if gathering his thoughts.
“Last night,” she began, breaking the silence. “The wolf. It listened to you.”
Kade looked up, his expression unreadable. “Yes.”
“Why?” she pressed.
He set his coffee down, leaning back in his seat. “Because I’m not like you, Alyssa.”
Her brow furrowed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Kade sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “There are things in this world that most people don’t know about—things that exist in the shadows.”
“Like wolves that glow in the dark?” she said, her tone half-joking.
“Like werewolves,” he said, his voice low and serious.
Alyssa blinked, her mind struggling to process the word. “Werewolves? You’re kidding, right?”
“I wish I was,” Kade said, his gaze steady.
For a moment, Alyssa didn’t know what to say. She wanted to laugh, to tell him he was crazy, but something in his eyes stopped her.
“You’re serious,” she said finally.
“Completely,” he replied.
She leaned back in her seat, crossing her arms. “Okay. Let’s say I believe you. What does that have to do with you?”
Kade hesitated, and for the first time since she’d met him, he looked unsure of himself. “Because I am one,” he admitted.
Alyssa stared at him, her mind reeling. “You’re… a werewolf?”
“Yes.”
“Prove it,” she challenged, her voice sharper than she intended.
Kade’s eyes flickered briefly, and she thought she saw something—something inhuman—flash in them. It was gone almost as quickly as it appeared, but it was enough to make her heart skip a beat.
“You don’t want me to prove it here,” he said, his tone warning.
Alyssa swallowed hard, her bravado faltering. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you deserve to know the truth,” he said. “And because you’re in danger.”
“Danger?”
Kade leaned forward, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “That wolf you saw last night wasn’t just any wolf. It was part of a pack—a pack that’s been watching this town for weeks. They’re looking for something—or someone.”
“And you think they’re looking for me?” Alyssa asked, her voice barely audible.
“I don’t think,” Kade said. “I know.”
That night, Alyssa sat in her room, replaying Kade’s words over and over in her mind. She didn’t know what to believe, but one thing was clear: her life was no longer her own.
She glanced at her reflection in the mirror, her confident façade slipping as the weight of everything began to sink in. She was just Alyssa—a girl trying to navigate life in a small town. She wasn’t ready for this.
But as the memory of the wolf—and Kade’s warning—came rushing back, she straightened her shoulders and lifted her chin.
Ready or not, she wasn’t going to let fear dictate her life.
That night, Alyssa sat by the large bay window in her bedroom, her legs tucked beneath her as she stared out into the vast darkness of the estate’s gardens. The moon hung low, its silver light casting an eerie glow over the neatly trimmed hedges and flowerbeds.
Her mind replayed Kade’s words on an endless loop: “I am one… You’re in danger.”
She hated how easily she believed him. Every logical part of her brain told her it was impossible, but deep down, she couldn’t deny the truth in his eyes—or the raw, unshakable instinct that told her something was coming.
The faint sound of footsteps pulled her from her thoughts. She turned, her heart leaping into her throat, but it was only Mariam, the family’s housekeeper. The older woman gave Alyssa a small, reassuring smile as she carried a tray of tea and biscuits to the table by the door.
“Miss Alyssa,” Mariam said softly, her voice warm. “You’ve been so quiet tonight. Is everything all right?”
Alyssa forced a smile. “I’m fine, Mariam. Just thinking.”
Mariam hesitated, her dark eyes searching Alyssa’s face. “If you need anything, you only have to ask.”
“Thank you,” Alyssa said, her voice barely above a whisper.
As Mariam left, Alyssa turned her gaze back to the window. The gardens stretched out before her like a dark, inviting void. For a moment, she considered going outside—to see if the wolf was still out there, watching her.
Her hand moved to her necklace, a habit she’d picked up whenever she was deep in thought. It was a small, delicate thing—gold with an emerald pendant. Eleanor had given it to her when she turned eighteen, saying it had belonged to her birth mother.
Her birth mother. The thought tugged at her, as it often did. Who was she? Where had she gone? Eleanor had been kind enough, but she’d never spoken much about Alyssa’s biological family, always deflecting questions with vague reassurances.
What if this has something to do with them? Alyssa thought.
She shook her head, trying to dismiss the idea, but it clung to her like a shadow. Kade had said the wolves were searching for something—or someone. Could it be her? And if so, why?
A sudden knock at the window startled her, breaking her train of thought. Alyssa’s heart raced as she turned to see Kade standing outside, his dark figure silhouetted by the moonlight.
She hesitated, then pushed the window open. “What are you doing here?” she hissed.
“I needed to make sure you’re safe,” he said simply, his voice low.
“I’m fine,” she replied, though her racing heart betrayed her.
Kade’s eyes flicked toward the forest beyond the gardens. “It’s not safe for you to be alone right now. They’re closer than you think.”
Her stomach churned at his words. “What do they want from me?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted, his jaw tightening. “But I’m going to find out.”
Before she could respond, a howl echoed through the night, low and mournful. Alyssa’s blood turned to ice as the sound carried through the trees, growing louder and closer.
Kade’s expression hardened. “Get inside and lock the doors.”
“What about you?” she asked, panic rising in her chest.
“Don’t worry about me,” he said, his tone firm. “Just stay safe.”
And with that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Alyssa alone with the weight of her fears—and the growing certainty that her life was no longer her own.
