CHAPTER TWO: SOBER

The secretary walks into the office but Genny refuses to move an inch from where she stands. Jimmy who was lost in thoughts stared keenly at her. He was totally confused.

He turns his face to the right side of his office, his heartbeat raced as a part of him could feel the regrets all over Genny. He didn't know whether to pay her evil with good, or otherwise.

"Young lady, standing there won't change anything. You wanted to see him, why stand there like a moron" The secretary who was fed up spoke harshly to Genny. Genny didn't flinch, hot tears flowed down her cheeks as she was totally ashamed.

"Let her be!!"Jimmy snapped

"Huh!?" The secretary exclaimed.

"One more word from your mouth, and you are fired"Jimmy pronounced. The secretary's eyes popped out, and she swallowed emptiness.

"No, No, No," Genny said continuously, she sniffed as she turned around, walking towards the exit door of the company.

Jimmy sprang up from his seat, picked up his jacket, and ran after her.

"Genny please wait!!" He called as they were already outside.

Genny stops on her track, and so does he.

"What else do you want to hear from me?"Genny asked amidst her tears.

"What are you talking about?"Jimmy asked puzzled.

"Am sorry, but I don't need the job again" Genny said and waved a taxi, leaving that instant.

"Should I just give up on her?" He asked looking so frustrated.

"No, you are mine Genny" he cried, walking scantily towards his car.

He entered the car and whispered "I will make you love me Genny"

He drove off immediately.

GENNY'S HOUSE

It was evening already, the house seemed empty when Genny came in. Her head splashed from the kitchen, and she propelled towards the kitchen door. There stood Miss Ella and Berry.

"Good evening Mom. Hey Berry, making dinner with Mom?" She asked smiling faintly. Berry nodded in response.

"You are welcome home lovely. Go and freshen up, dinner will be served soon"Miss Ella replied.

Genny nodded and ran to her room. She jammed the door forcefully and headed to her table. She picked up a picture frame, in it was the image of her dad. Her tears poured uncontrollably as she rubbed her fingers on the picture surface.

"I miss you, Dad, I would not be going through all this if you were still here with me" She sobbed.

If there was something she wasn't prepared to let go, then that was her father's death. The past haunted her present, some rested on both shoulders, dragging back the hands of her clock. It made her withdraw from responsibilities she could face.

"Hey Genny, are you okay?" Miss Ella asked them at the other end as she continued knocking.

That was when Genny realized that someone was at the door. She hid the picture quickly and cleaned her eyes before going to open the door.

"Is anything wrong?"Miss Ella intruded with a question.

"Nothing at all. I was trying to rest for a while, it was a hectic day at school" Genny said walking into the room. Miss Ella followed her.

"That reminds me. How was the interview? Did you get the job you applied for?"Miss Ella asked unexpectedly. It struck Genny's ear like lightning. She feigned a sigh and pondered on what to say.

"I rejected it."She spoke sharply.

"What!! You Nuisance!"Miss Ella scoffed.

"It wasn't necessary getting the job, we've been doing fine. I just thought I could be of help" Genny said and climbed her bed.

"I just thought I could help"Miss Ella mimicked

"You know, you are just like your father. Bunch of losers, you can't take responsibility for yourself. Our house rent is expiring Soon. How do you think about sleeping in my restaurant"Miss Ella screamed and burst into tears.

Genny began to cry too. She went to her mom and hugged her tightly. Miss Ella hugs her back. "Tell me you didn't reject the job. It means a lot to us"Miss Ella whispered.

Memories flashed in her mind and she remembers what she told the secretary"This job means a lot to my family and my academics. Please ma"

"Stop crying, you aren't my cutie if you cry. I will get the job" Genny said with a smile.

"Promise?"

"I promise. Let's go have dinner before it gets cold"Genny uttered and they walked out of the room. As they moved, Genny battled with her inner self. Thousands of Lousy questions banged in her head. *How on Earth would she get the job back? How would she approach or contact Jimmy?*

THE COLUMBIA ROOM*{BAR}

Jimmy drove straight to the bar after the coincidence. He called Duran his best friend, and they met at the bar to have some shots. They sat opposite each other and a table demarcated them. A bottle of Gin settled beside Jimmy's corner of the table. Duran had only a bottle of bear in his hand. Since Jimmy said nothing but drink, he raised a question.

"Did you get rejected again?"

Jimmy stared blankly at him. Duran swallowed

"You only drink like this when you are rejected or heartbroken"Duran said again.

Jimmy said nothing and grabbed his Gin. He placed it on his lips ready to gulp its content, but Duran snatched it from him forcefully.

"What the hell is wrong with you man?"Duran asked

"What is wrong with you too?"Jimmy said with a low drunk voice. Duran hissed but the next thing kept him hanging

"Am I not handsome? Am I that bad?"Jimmy asked stupidly as he hit his chest. He broke into tears placing his head on the table. Every head in the bar turned in their direction. Some laughed

Jimmy stood and began to stagger under the influence of alcohol. "Why would she keep on rejecting me?" He asked, pointing at the female bartender. "Answer me. Why?"He sobbed. Duran gestured to her and she left immediately

"Your friend needs some rest. He is hurt" A random man said.

"The power of a woman"A man cracked and everyone burst into laughter.

Duran walks to Jimmy's side, sliding his arm around his neck. He assisted him as they walked out of the bar.

"I forgot to bring that?"Jimmy said pointing at the Gin on the table

"You stink man. Just shut up for now"Duran scolded. Jimmy hiccupped and began to sing a lullaby.

It almost took an eternity before they got to the car. "hey stand properly or I will recycle you"Duran cursed as he searched Jimmy's pocket for the car key. Duran opened the door and helped him sit inside.

He entered the driver's seat and began to drive back to Jimmy's house.

GENNY'S ROOM*

Genny was done having her dinner, she was already in her night dress after taking a bath. She was surfing through the internet when her phone rang. She swipes the green circle on the phone screen.

"Hey James"

"Hi, Genny. I saw your text earlier, I was working on my assignment so I couldn't reply" James said from his end.

"Huh, I almost forgot we had an assignment. And we will submit it tomorrow"Genny gasps.

"You are a jerk" James chuckled.

"By the way, why do you need Jimmy's number so badly?"James asked.

"I. Genny sighed as she found it difficult to speak.

"Oh," James muttered and clears his throat.

"It's not what you think naughty imp. Give what I asked for"

"Not until you tell me why"

"I promise to tell you tomorrow. Hope that will make you happy?"

"A little bit," James said and hung up.

"Son of a bench"Genny cursed silently.

Seconds later, Genny's phone dinged and she smiled. Then frowns immediately. She copied the phone number and pasted it into her diary. She breaths in and out before sending it.

IN JIMMY'S CAR*

Jimmy was still humming the lullaby as Duran drove. His phone began to buzz in his breast pocket. He brought it out and picks the call.

"Hello," He said gently.

"Good evening Jimmy, it's Genny"

Jimmy's heart skipped a beat, and he came back to normal. He puts the phone away from his mouth and turns to Duran who is driving silently.

"Stop this f*****g car now!"

"Stop it!!"He shouted and Duran pressed his foot hard on the brake pad. The tyres made screeching sounds afterward coming to a halt.

"Sorry about that Genny," He said panting

"It's okay, how are you doing?"Genny asked with ease.

"Am fine and you?" Jimmy tried to act okay. He took a deep breath.

"Do you have other plans tonight?"

"N... No"He stammered.

"Can we meet right now? I will text you the address"Genny said and ended the call.

Jimmy's breath seized for a while. Was it all a drama or what? His thoughts fired.

Soon a text message entered and Jimmy turned his phone's screen to Duran's face.

"You know this place right?" He asked.

"Yes"

"Take me there, "Jimmy said sitting properly.

Duran chuckled and started the vehicle. He turns the steering wheel, heading back to the lane they can from.

BACK TO GENNY'S ROOM*

Genny sighed loudly "Why did he freak out all of a sudden"Genny chuckled.

"What should I wear now? Not something too attractive, No. It doesn't matter" She sighed and headed to her closet. She picks a mini gown from her closet. She wears it and dips her legs into her floppy slippers. She walks out of the house gently.

OUTSIDE*

In the dark of night, her skin shone brightly, and her cream-colored hair made her look elegant. She smiles as the gentle breeze touches her skin.

Bright lights from a vehicle struck her eyes and she covered them quickly. The car pulled up beside her, and Jimmy rushed down.

He runs to her and pulls her body, pulling her into a tight hug. Duran stood beside the car chuckling. Genny was puzzled at such a dramatic entry.

"Just this once Genny. Just this once. Am sober now"He whispered in her ears as tears rolled gently down his cheeks.

Her eyes trailed down to the side of his neck. A moon tattoo was brightly drawn on the area. She gasps inwardly. It looks like something she has seen before. Who exactly is Jimmy? She asked inwardly.
