~ The Dress Dilemma ~
"Can you believe it's almost time for the Mating Ceremony?" she exclaimed, her voice filled with anticipation. "I've been planning my dress for weeks!"
The days leading up to the Mating Ceremony were charged with palpable excitement, and my friends were revelling in it. Summer's enthusiasm was infectious, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she animatedly chatted about the event.
I sat beneath the branches of the ancient Elyndor tree, its fragrant blossoms dangling like delicate stars in the night sky, listening to my friends' chatter. Summer and Violet did most of the talking among the four of us. I, as the introvert, and Lief, the amused observer, seemed content to let them lead the conversation.
Our favourite spot beneath the Elyndor tree had been a cherished meeting place for generations, its presence a romantic gesture from my ancestors to our family. I leaned against its gnarled trunk, idly plucking at a nearby flower, rolling its stem between my thumbs as my mind drifted. This particular tree was one of the rarest in our world, protected by ancient magic. My grandfather had cast a spell that bound it to our family, preventing anyone from uprooting it for themselves. Those meddling teenagers soon found that out, the hard way. Only the females of our family held the power to break the enchantment. It was old magic, and the intricacies remained a mystery to me.
Violet's exclamation brought me back to the present. "I found the perfect gown," she gushed, her eyes alight with excitement. "It's breathtaking, beautiful. It shimmers like moonlight on water."
Her words made me realise that I hadn't even thought about what to wear for the special day. Panic began to gnaw at me as I considered attending such a grand event unprepared.
The intensity of their collective gazes fell on me, and I could practically feel their silent question hanging in the air. My eyes darted between them, and I couldn't help but ask, "What?"
Violet, her enthusiasm undiminished, spoke first. "We were just wondering, Ri, have you picked out a dress for the Mating Ceremony?"
"I haven't picked out a dress yet," I admitted, my voice tinged with sheepishness. The idea of attending such a grand event without the right attire felt like a nightmare taking shape.
Summer's eyes widened in surprise, a touch of concern in her voice. "You haven't picked a dress yet? This is the Mating Ceremony! Emphasising on ‘Mating Ceremony.’
Violet nodded vehemently in agreement, “We can’t let you attend without a stunning dress. It’s practically a crime against fashion!"
"It's just a dress, girls. Ri will look beautiful no matter what she wears," rolling his eyes at their dramatic reaction.
Summer and Violet shared an incredulous look. Summer retorted, "It's not just a dress, Lief. This is the Mating Ceremony. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event! Ri deserves to shine."
“Technically it's more once in a blue moon and seeing that's every four years, it really not that big of a deal.”
Summer threw a glare my way. I got the message lou an clear. “Okay, okay,” hands raised in mock defeat. She huffed in response. I guess I'm saved from her wrath, for now.
Violet chimed in, her eyes filled with concern for me. "We can't let her attend without a stunning dress. It's practically a crime against fashion!"
Lief shrugged, "If you say so," his tone nonchalantly.
"Fine, you win. I'll let you help me find a gown," I said, half amused, half exasperated. "But only if you promise; nothing frilly or girly.
Summer and Violet exchanged a triumphant glance, their faces lighting up with smiles. "Deal!" they chimed in unison.
“Come over tomorrow." They promised to come over the next day, armed with catalogues and excitement, ready to transform me into a vision of elegance.
I left them to plan and scheme, their excitement palpable. I turned my attention to Lief, who stood by the garden's edge, watching the stars twinkle above. "I'm assuming you have all your things sorted for the ceremony," I said, attempting to change the subject.
Lief shrugged casually, "Yeah, pretty much,” his ever-present grin playing on his lips.
"Not fair, why do guys have things easy?" I groaned, feeling the weight of expectations settle on my shoulders.
"Well, if you need any help, you know where to find me," his expression teasing.
I groaned, casting a dramatic look of despair towards the heavens. "What have I gotten myself into?"
The next day dawned with the sun casting a warm glow through my bedroom window, illuminating a scene of organised chaos. Clothes were strewn across my bed and the floor, each fabric whispering tales of elegance and splendour. Summer and Violet, my ever-enthusiastic companions, had taken it upon themselves to transform me into a vision of grace. Their laughter filled the room, echoing like a melody, their excitement infectious.
As they delved into the sea of fabrics and colours, I found myself retreating into my thoughts, a sanctuary from the flurry of girlish fervour. I couldn't help but envy Lief, blissfully unaware of the whirlwind happening in my room. While I cherished my friends, their exuberance for all things feminine clashed with my preference for solitude and a good book over dresses and dances. The prospect of seeking out a mate in the midst of a grand ball seemed overwhelming, a daunting endeavor that left me yearning for the simplicity of fantasy realms.
“Feraie, this colour will make you stand out in the crowd. You’ll be the talk of the ceremony!” Violet held up a deep crimson dress, its delicate embroidery catching the light as it shimmered.
I hesitated, my fingers trailing over the smooth fabric. “It’s really not me,” I said, voicing my concern, my voice infused with a hint of stubbornness. “Besides, I'd rather not wear a dress at all, if I could help it.”
Sensing my hesitation, Summer dove back into the pile with determination in her eyes. She emerged triumphant, holding a royal blue jumpsuit. Its bottom half was connected to a flowing dress, an ingenious design that combined elegance and comfort. Gems adorned the waist, sparkling like stars against the fabric.
“It’s perfect,” I exclaimed simultaneously with Violet.
“Oh, My Magic,” Violet gasped, her eyes wide with appreciation. “And the intricate patterns on it are reminiscent of ancient magic. It suits the occasion perfectly.”
With their approval, a wave of excitement washed over me. The jumpsuit was a symbol of strength and sophistication, a reflection of the woman I was becoming. “Awesome! Now that that’s sorted, we can’t forget comfortable shoes! We’ll be doing a lot of walking and dancing.” Violet revealed a pair of black pumps, embellished with gems that matched the outfit flawlessly.
Once the outfit was chosen and neatly hung behind my door, we settled on my bed, the room bathed in the soft glow of twilight. The heap of clothes in the corner seemed like an abandoned treasure trove, remnants of a whirlwind decision-making session.
The conversation shifted to the Mating Ceremony itself, our voices filled with a blend of anticipation and wonder. Violet and Summer launched into a discussion about their ideal mates, swooning over imagined rendezvous and romantic encounters. Their giggles filled the room as they shared their fantasies, eyes sparkling with dreams of a love that transcended realms.
When their gazes turned toward me, a wave of shyness washed over me. "I...I don't really know," I stammered, my voice soft and hesitant. "I've always found solace in books and dreams, not in the prospect of finding a mate."
“It’s like stepping into a world of fairy tales and enchantments,” Summer added, his voice tinged with awe.
Violet nodded, her expression reflecting the wonder we all felt. “And we’ll be there together, supporting each other every step of the way.”
