Chapter 6: A New Life Begins

961 Words
I didn’t realize how much my life had changed until I woke up the next morning. For a moment, I forgot where I was. The soft sheets, the quiet stillness, the faint scent of something expensive lingering in the air—it all felt unfamiliar. Then it hit me. Adrian. His house. His rules. My chest tightened slightly as I sat up, staring around the massive room that didn’t feel like mine. Not yet. A soft knock pulled me from my thoughts. “Miss Ava?” a maid’s voice called gently. “May I come in?” “Yes,” I replied. The door opened, and two maids stepped in, both dressed neatly, their expressions respectful. “We’ve prepared some clothes for you,” one of them said, placing a few shopping bags on the bed. I blinked. “For me?” “Yes, sir instructed us to.” Of course he did. I hesitated before reaching for one of the bags, pulling out a dress. It was beautiful. Simple, yet elegant. The kind of thing I had only ever seen on other people. “Sir would like to see you once you’re ready,” the maid added. My fingers tightened slightly around the fabric. “Where is he?” “In his study.” I nodded slowly. “Okay… thank you.” They bowed slightly before leaving the room. Once I was alone again, I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. Everything felt… controlled. Planned. Like I had stepped into someone else’s world without permission. Still, I changed into the dress. It fit perfectly. Too perfectly. As if it had been chosen specifically for me. That thought alone made my heart beat faster. After a moment of hesitation, I stepped out of the room. The hallway was quiet. Too quiet. I followed the directions the maids had given me until I stood in front of a large door. His study. I raised my hand— And knocked. “Come in.” His voice was calm, steady. I pushed the door open slowly. Adrian stood near the window, his back to me, his posture relaxed yet commanding. Even without facing me, he filled the entire room. “I’m here,” I said softly. He turned. And his eyes immediately found me. For a brief moment— He said nothing. His gaze moved slowly, taking in every detail. And something about that look made my stomach tighten. “Turn around,” he said suddenly. I blinked. “What?” “Turn.” My heart skipped, but I obeyed. Slowly. Silently. I could feel his eyes on me the entire time. Watching. Evaluating. When I faced him again, his expression hadn’t changed. But something in his eyes had. “Good,” he said simply. My breath caught slightly. “Did you… choose this?” I asked, glancing down at the dress. “Yes.” The answer came without hesitation. “Why?” I asked before I could stop myself. His gaze sharpened slightly. “Do you question everything?” I swallowed. “No…” “Good,” he said again, walking toward his desk. I stood there, unsure of what to do. “Come here,” he added. I stepped closer, my heart beating faster with every step. When I reached the desk, he picked up a small file and placed it in front of me. “Read.” I looked down. Documents. My name. My information. My breath caught. “What is this?” “Your new identity here,” he said calmly. “Everything you need will be taken care of.” I stared at the papers, confusion flooding my mind. “Why are you doing all this for me?” I asked again. This time, he didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he leaned slightly against the desk, his gaze fixed on me. “You’re under my protection now,” he said finally. Protection. The word echoed in my mind. “And what does that mean?” I whispered. His expression darkened just slightly. “It means no one touches you,” he said. “No one disrespects you.” My heart skipped. “And it also means…” He stepped closer. Close enough that I had to tilt my head slightly to meet his eyes. “…you don’t make decisions that put you at risk.” My breath hitched. “That includes going back to him.” I frowned slightly. “I wasn’t planning to—” “Good,” he cut in smoothly. Silence fell between us again. But it didn’t feel empty. It felt… charged. “Today,” he continued, stepping back slightly, “you’ll get familiar with the house.” I nodded slowly. “And tonight,” he added, “you’re coming with me.” My eyes widened slightly. “Where?” “A dinner.” A strange feeling settled in my chest. “Nervous?” he asked, noticing my hesitation. “A little,” I admitted. A faint smirk touched his lips. “You should be.” That didn’t help. At all. “But don’t worry,” he continued calmly. “You’ll be with me.” Something about the way he said it made my heart skip again. Not reassurance. Not exactly. More like a statement. A fact. And somehow… That was even more unsettling. “Go,” he said, already turning his attention back to his desk. “Get ready.” I hesitated for a second before nodding. “Okay.” As I walked toward the door, my mind raced. A dinner. With him. In his world. I had no idea what to expect. But deep down— I knew this was only the beginning. And whatever came next… Would change everything.
