I couldn’t breathe.
The air between us felt too thick, too heavy… like something dangerous was about to happen.
His eyes were still on me.
Sharp. Unreadable. Intense.
“Answer me,” he said quietly.
My lips parted, but no words came out.
Stay?
Leave?
Did I even have a choice?
Before I could respond, my husband scoffed from behind me.
“She’s leaving,” he said coldly. “She doesn’t belong here.”
Something about his tone made my chest tighten again.
But the man in front of me didn’t move.
Didn’t even acknowledge him.
Instead, his gaze remained locked on mine, as if I was the only person in the room.
“Do you always let others decide for you?” he asked.
The question hit harder than it should have.
I swallowed, my fingers tightening around the fabric of my dress.
“I…” My voice came out small. “I don’t have a choice.”
A faint smirk touched his lips.
“Everyone has a choice.”
Before I could process his words, he suddenly reached out—
And tilted my chin up.
My breath hitched.
His touch was firm, controlled… yet not rough.
“Look at me when you speak,” he murmured.
My heart started racing.
This man—
He was nothing like my husband.
Where Ethan was cold and dismissive, this man was… overwhelming.
Dangerous in a completely different way.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Ava,” I whispered.
“Ava,” he repeated slowly, as if testing the sound.
Then, finally, he let go.
I didn’t realize I had been holding my breath until he stepped back.
“My name is Adrian.”
The name sent a strange chill through me.
I had heard of him.
Everyone had.
The powerful, untouchable older brother.
The one people feared.
The one no one dared to cross.
And right now—
He was standing in front of me.
Watching me like I was something worth noticing.
“Adrian,” my husband snapped, clearly annoyed. “Stop wasting time. She’s leaving.”
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
But something in the air shifted.
“Is that so?” he said calmly.
Then his eyes flicked back to me.
“Tell me, Ava… where exactly are you going?”
The question caught me off guard.
I opened my mouth—
And then froze.
I had nowhere to go.
No home.
No place.
Nothing.
My silence was answer enough.
A slow, knowing smile appeared on his lips.
“Just as I thought.”
My husband let out an irritated sigh. “This is ridiculous.”
Adrian finally turned to look at him.
And just like that—
The atmosphere turned cold.
“If you didn’t want a wife,” Adrian said quietly, “you shouldn’t have gotten married.”
“That’s not your concern,” Ethan shot back.
“No,” Adrian agreed. “But she is.”
My heart skipped.
Before I could understand what he meant, he stepped closer again.
Close enough that I could feel his presence surrounding me.
“Come with me,” he said.
I blinked.
“What?”
“If you have nowhere to go,” he continued calmly, “then I’ll give you a place to stay.”
My breath caught.
This was insane.
“I—I can’t just—”
“You can,” he interrupted smoothly.
Then, leaning slightly closer, he added in a lower voice—
“Or you can walk out that door… and face whatever is waiting for you alone.”
My chest tightened.
He wasn’t wrong.
I had nothing.
No one.
And somehow… that scared me more than him.
“Why?” I asked softly. “Why are you helping me?”
For a brief moment, something unreadable flashed in his eyes.
Then he said—
“Let’s just say… I don’t like seeing valuable things being thrown away.”
My heart skipped again.
Valuable?
Was that how he saw me?
Before I could respond, he straightened.
“Take your time,” he said calmly. “But don’t take too long.”
Then, without another word, he turned and walked toward the door.
Stopping just beside it.
Waiting.
For me.
My pulse pounded in my ears as I stood there, frozen between two choices.
Behind me—
A husband who had already discarded me.
In front of me—
A man who felt far more dangerous than anything I had ever known.
And yet…
My feet moved.
One step.
Then another.
Until I was standing beside him.
I didn’t look back.
I couldn’t.
Because deep down—
I knew the moment I chose to follow Adrian…
Everything in my life was about to change
