Untold Truth

“Haze! Wake up.” Angela’s voice broke through the darkness, accompanied by a gentle nudge against Hazel’s shoulder. Hazel stirred beneath the thin blanket, her brows furrowing as she slowly opened her eyes. “Wake up. I need to show you something.” Hazel blinked sleepily at her. “What?” “I need to show you something, but you have to promise me one thing.” Angela’s expression suddenly became serious. “No matter what you see or hear, you must remain completely silent.” Hazel’s sleep vanished almost instantly. “Why?” “Just promise me.” Hazel stared at her for a moment before reluctantly nodding. “Okay.” “Good.” Angela reached beneath her bed and pulled out a pair of midnight-black jeans and a black round-neck shirt. “Change into these.” Hazel accepted the clothes, her confusion deepening. She wanted to ask questions, but something in Angela’s expression stopped her. As she changed, an uneasy feeling settled in her chest. Her heart began pounding. She didn’t know where Angela was taking her or why they needed to dress in black, but every instinct inside her screamed that something was wrong. Something was about to happen. Something that would change everything. “I’m done, Angel,” Hazel whispered after changing. “Good.” Angela moved behind her, gathering Hazel’s long hair into a high ponytail. She did the same with her own hair before handing Hazel a pair of dark night-vision glasses. She sprayed something on both of them to mask their scent. Hazel frowned as she put them on. “Let me remind you again,” Angela whispered. “Whatever happens, you stay silent.” “I will. I promise.” Angela studied her suspiciously for a few seconds. “Alright. Let’s go.” She took Hazel’s hand and slowly pushed the door open. The hinges barely made a sound. They slipped into the hallway. The entire compound was swallowed by darkness. Since the pack experienced a scheduled blackout after nine every night, the darkness provided them with the perfect cover. Still, Hazel’s heightened werewolf senses reminded her that darkness meant nothing to other werewolves. Anyone could see them. Anyone could catch them. Angela led her through the Omega hallway and toward the mansion reserved for the Alpha’s family. Hazel’s stomach twisted. “Angel…” she whispered, tugging gently at Angela’s clothes. “What are we doing here?” “Shhh.” Angela immediately placed a finger against her lips. Then she froze. A guard was standing ahead. Angela quickly pulled Hazel down, and they crouched behind a nearby wall. Hazel’s hands began trembling. Angela felt it and squeezed her hand reassuringly. “Stay calm,” she mouthed. She peeked around the corner, studying the guards. Then, with the confidence of someone who had done this before, she picked up three small pebbles. Hazel stared at her in disbelief. Angela threw the first pebble into the bushes. Rustle. One of the guards immediately turned. “What was that?” He moved toward the bushes. Angela waited. Then she threw another pebble farther away. The second guard followed. “Now.” Angela grabbed Hazel’s hand. They bolted. They sprinted across the open space and slipped through the entrance just before the guards could turn around. Hazel pressed herself against the wall, breathing heavily. “That was… intense,” Angela whispered, placing a hand over her chest. Hazel stared at her. “Have you done this before?” Angela shrugged innocently. “Once or twice.” Hazel’s mouth fell open. “Once or twice?” Angela grinned. “Okay, maybe more than twice.” Before Hazel could respond, Angela pulled her deeper into the mansion. They removed their shoes and carried them against their chests as they quietly climbed the stairs. Every creaking floorboard sounded deafening in Hazel’s ears. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Finally, Angela stopped outside a large suite. Hazel frowned. “Angel…” Angela raised a finger to her lips. They were standing outside Liam’s suite. Liam. The future Alpha. Hazel’s stomach twisted. “What are we doing here?” “Listen.” Angela moved closer to the only room that had its lights on. Hazel followed reluctantly. Then— Shuffle. Hazel froze. Her eyes widened. “What—” Angela immediately covered her mouth. “Listen.” They stood perfectly still. Then a familiar masculine voice drifted through the door. “Amelia…” Hazel’s blood ran cold. She knew that voice. Liam. Her heart began pounding so hard she was afraid the people inside would hear it. A woman’s voice answered. “Liam…” Her tone was soft. Coquettish. Intimate. Hazel’s brows knitted together. Then Liam spoke again. “She really is my mate.” Hazel’s breath caught. Mate? Her eyes widened. Angela slowly glanced at her. “It has started,” she whispered. A strange, almost grim smile appeared on her face. Inside the room, Amelia laughed softly. “Your mate?” “Yes.” Liam sighed heavily. “I don’t understand how the Moon Goddess could be so cruel.” Hazel’s heart skipped. “What do you mean?” Amelia asked. “How could she pair me with someone so weak?” Hazel’s face went pale. Her fingers curled into fists. “I know,” Liam continued. “And the bond is getting stronger. We’re getting closer to the full moon.” “Then you need to do something before the full moon.” “I know.” His voice became frustrated. “But I can’t reject her without everyone finding out. Once the elders know about the bond, it’ll be impossible.” “Why?” “Because they’ll support her.” Amelia scoffed. “Why would they?” “Because she’s Father’s favorite.” Liam’s voice was bitter. “She was personally trained by him. She’s practically his adopted daughter. The elders will think she deserves to rule beside me.” Hazel stopped breathing. Her heart pounded painfully. Who are they talking about? Then Amelia asked the question that shattered whatever hope remained inside her. “But why did the Alpha adopt her in the first place?” Silence. Then Liam answered. “Father said he was the one who killed her parents.” Hazel’s eyes widened. The world seemed to stop. Her knees weakened. Angela immediately grabbed her arm. Inside the room, Liam continued. “Her parents were powerful. Father believed Hazel would inherit their abilities.” Hazel’s lips trembled. “Hazel?” Angela’s eyes filled with worry. Liam continued. “He planned to groom her from childhood and turn her into his personal killing weapon.” A tiny, broken whimper escaped Hazel’s lips. Angela immediately covered her mouth. But it was already too late. Hazel felt something inside her shatter. Everything she had believed about her life— Her parents. Her childhood. Alpha Raymond. Her place in the pack. Liam. Everything had been a lie. The man she had blamed herself for killing had actually murdered her parents. The man she believed had rescued her had been preparing her to become a weapon. And her mate… Her supposed soulmate… considered her a weakness. Hot tears rolled silently down her cheeks. Angela looked at Hazel and knew. They had to leave. Immediately. She grabbed Hazel’s hand and pulled her away. They raced through the dark corridors, barely escaping the guards. But Hazel wasn’t really there anymore. Her body moved. Her mind didn’t. She stumbled repeatedly, nearly getting them caught more than once. “Come on, Haze!” Angela pulled her along. “Haze, please!” Nothing. Hazel remained completely silent. Her eyes were empty. Like someone had switched off the light inside her. “Hazel!” Back inside their room, Angela shook her shoulders. “Hazel, look at me!” Nothing. Hazel sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the floor. Her face was expressionless. Her tears had stopped. And somehow, that frightened Angela more. “Haze, stop scaring me.” Angela crouched in front of her. “I didn’t know this would happen. I swear.” Nothing. “I only wanted you to stop blaming yourself for Alpha Raymond’s death. I wanted you to know the truth.” Still nothing. Angela stood and began pacing. She tugged anxiously at her hair. “What have I done?” She had thought the truth would free Hazel. Instead, it had destroyed her. Angela rushed into the bathroom and returned moments later with a bowl of cold water. Without hesitation, she sprinkled it over Hazel’s face. Hazel flinched. Her eyelids fluttered. She blinked once. Twice. Angela immediately knelt before her. “Haze?” Hazel slowly looked at her. “Are you here?” Hazel stared at her for several seconds. Then, in a voice so calm it frightened Angela, she whispered— “Angela…” “Yes?” “Let’s escape.” Angela froze. Hazel’s eyes were no longer empty. They were filled with something far more dangerous. Determination. “Let’s leave this pack.” Angela swallowed. “Hazel—” “I don’t care where we go.” Hazel stood slowly. “I don’t care what happens to me.” Her voice trembled, but she didn’t cry. “I just know one thing…” She looked toward the window, toward the darkness beyond the pack grounds. “I will never let them turn me into a weapon.” Angela stared at her. For the first time that night, Hazel looked alive again. But Angela couldn’t shake the feeling that the girl standing before her was no longer the same Hazel who had gone into Liam’s mansion. The truth had awakened something inside her. And whatever happened next… The Red Moon Pack would never be the same.
