chapter 7

Weeks turned into endless days of watchful waiting, every shadow checked, every sound tested, every weapon polished until it shone like glass. They had prepared for the unknown, braced for what might come, but nothing could have readied them for the hush that fell over the valley that morning. The wind died completely. Not a single leaf stirred on the ancient oaks. The birds had fallen silent hours before, their songs vanished as if stolen away. The air felt heavy, thick enough to press against the chest, cold and still as the breath held before a scream. It was the kind of unnatural quiet that makes your skin prickle, whispering of terrible things gathering just out of sight. Taby Sam stood apart from the others, her hand slipping unconsciously into the deep fold of her tunic, closing tight around the glowing sphere she kept hidden there. It was warm, too warm, thrumming with a low, steady pulse against her palm, as if the very stone had a frantic, beating heart. It hummed a warning she could not quite hear, sending faint tingles racing up her arm. Deep in her bones, she knew it was not just sensing danger; it was calling to it. The weight of her destiny pressed heavily on her shoulders, and she felt a mix of anxiety and resolve; she was ready to confront whatever lay ahead. Eldritch Stormvale watched her from the edge of the courtyard, his tall frame rigid as stone. A cold, crawling shiver traced its way down his spine, sharp enough to make his jaw ache. His hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles blanched white, old scars pulling across his skin. He knew this feeling, he had felt it once before, on the day his world had burned and broken apart. The storm was not coming; it was already here. He threw back his head and roared, his voice like rolling thunder, loud enough to cut through the eerie silence: "Form up! Everyone to your posts, now! Seraphina has breakfast laid out, we eat while we can, and we waste nothing!" He strode over to Taby Sam, Bluy, and the dragons, his gaze hard but burning with fierce pride. "You three, stay sharp. Trust your bond, trust your gifts, and trust each other. Nothing gets past you." Then he turned to his commanders, his tone sharp and commanding: "Double the lookouts. Raise all defenses. The attack is imminent, do not let your guard down for even a heartbeat!" Inside the great hall, Seraphina waited by the long wooden table, sunlight catching the blue-green flecks in her gentle eyes, her skin glowing like polished sea glass, her smile warm enough to melt even the coldest dread. "Come along, all of you," she said softly, setting down bowls of steaming stew and crusty bread. "Eat well, and stay safe." Yet beneath her warm smile, her eyes were shadowed with fear. After the meal, no one lingered. They moved to their posts with grim purpose, scouts on the watchtowers, archers along the walls, healers standing ready with their remedies, warriors gripping their weapons tight. They counted every tick of time, every breath, every beat of their hearts, waiting for the storm to break. Taby Sam stood high on the northern outcrop, Lightning Star, her dragon, coiled close beside her, his scales crackling with faint, restless sparks. She looked up at the pale sky, and froze. Far above, drifting just beyond the sun’s glow, was a shape. Not a bird, not a cloud, something dark, shapeless, watching her. A cold hand pressed against her mind, a shiver of pure dread ran down her spine, and Lightning Star let out a low, warning growl. Then thunder crashed, not from the sky, but from everywhere at once, loud enough to shake the ground and rattle teeth. A raspy, hateful voice slithered through the air, wrapping around every ear like cold smoke: "We have found you. Run all you like, you cannot hide." A split second later came a roar so loud it drowned out everything else. A blast of dark fire exploded across the sky, lighting up the horizon with sickly green flame. Everyone froze, breath caught in their throats, then, as one, they drew their weapons. "Now!" Eldritch’s voice cut through the chaos. "Stand your ground! Fight as one!" The dragons surged forward, their powers weaving a tapestry of light and fury against the encroaching darkness. The village, their home, was safe for now, but Taby Sam felt the sphere pulse harder than ever. This was only the beginning. The real fight was still coming, and it would test every drop of strength, every hidden gift, and every bond they held dear.
