Chapter two - The Bet

Serena was the first to recover. Her gaze darted between Valentina and Lucien before a mischievous grin spread across her face. Then she laughed. "Oh, this is too good." Mira narrowed her eyes. "Serena..." "Oh, don't give me that look." Serena leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "Why don't we make this interesting?" Elise sighed. "I already hate where this is going." Serena ignored her. She pointed at Valentina. "You believe every man has a price." Then she gestured toward Lucien. "And he believes he doesn't." Her smile widened. "So prove it." Silence settled over the table. Even the nearby conversations seemed to quiet. Valentina calmly set her champagne glass on the table. "Prove what?" Serena's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Make him fall in love with you." She glanced at Lucien before continuing. "Not because of your money." "Not because of your influence." "And definitely not because you're Valentina Sinclair." She folded her arms. "Make Lucien Devereux genuinely fall in love with you." Elise pinched the bridge of her nose. "That is, without question, the worst idea you've ever had." "Three months," Serena announced. "If you can make him fall for you within three months..." She smiled triumphantly. "You win." Valentina tilted her head. "And what exactly do I win?" Mira chuckled. "The satisfaction of proving your enormous ego is actually justified." Serena laughed. "And unlimited bragging rights." Valentina's lips curved into a confident smile. "That hardly seems like a challenge." Throughout the conversation, Lucien remained silent. He simply stood there with a champagne glass in one hand, observing them with quiet amusement. Everyone expected him to refuse. Or laugh. Or politely excuse himself. Instead... A slow smile appeared on his face. Not mocking. Not arrogant. Confident. "I accept." The words landed like a stone in still water. Silence followed. Valentina looked at him. "Excuse me?" "I said..." Lucien met her eyes. "I accept the bet." His voice remained calm. Steady. "But I have one condition." He took a slow step toward her. Then another. The distance between them disappeared. Valentina caught the subtle scent of cedarwood and fresh rain. He stopped just close enough for her to notice the golden flecks hidden within his dark eyes. "If you lose..." His gaze never left hers. "You'll be my girlfriend for three months." A pause. "On my terms." The lounge fell silent. Someone nearby accidentally dropped a fork. The sharp clatter echoed across the marble floor. Girlfriend. Valentina Sinclair. On someone else's terms. Serena's mouth slowly fell open. Mira stared at Lucien as though he'd completely lost his mind. Even Elise, usually the calmest among them, looked genuinely speechless. Valentina felt her jaw tighten. No one challenged her. No one gave her conditions. And certainly no one had ever spoken as though she were the prize to be won. Pride flared inside her. Along with something she refused to acknowledge. He was just a man. A handsome man... But still just a man. And men had always fallen for her. Without exception. A slow smile returned to her lips. "Fine." Her voice was cool and unwavering. "I accept." Lucien extended his hand. For the briefest moment, Valentina considered leaving him waiting. Instead... She slipped her hand into his. His handshake was firm. Warm. Steady. Neither of them looked away. "Three months," Lucien said quietly. "Starting now." Their hands separated. Around them, whispers spread through the ballroom like wildfire. No one could remember the last time someone had openly challenged Valentina Sinclair. And no one expected her to accept. Valentina lifted her chin proudly. "Don't expect me to make this easy for you, Mr. Devereux." Lucien's smile deepened. "I was hoping you wouldn't, Ms. Sinclair." The challenge had been accepted. The bet had begun. --- The whispers continued long after Valentina and her friends walked away. Some called her reckless. Others admired her confidence. No one believed the bet would end well. Lucien remained where he was, watching her midnight-blue gown disappear into the sea of glittering guests. Only when she was out of sight did he finish the last sip of his champagne. A man in a charcoal-gray suit approached him quietly. His assistant. "Sir," he said in a low voice, "was accepting that bet really necessary?" Lucien handed him the empty glass. "It was." The assistant frowned. "You've spent years avoiding unnecessary attention. Tonight, you challenged the most powerful woman in the country in front of half the business world." Lucien slipped one hand into his pocket. His eyes remained fixed on the ballroom. "She believes she understands people." A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "She believes everyone can be bought." The assistant hesitated. "And can they?" Lucien finally looked away from the crowd. "No." His answer was calm. Certain. "Especially not me." He turned toward the exit. "Come on." The assistant followed. "Where are we going, sir?" Lucien smiled—a quiet, unreadable smile. "To let Miss Sinclair believe she's in control." He stepped into the elevator as the doors slowly closed. "After all..." "...the best hunters never realize they're being hunted." The elevator doors slid shut.
