CHAPTER SEVEN Amari’s Pov: I got dressed and headed downstairs to wait for Mia and Chris to get ready. Mia came downstairs looking like a princess in her wine coloured flowing dress, of course Chris looked like Prince Charming beside her. They looked so lovely together. When Mia walked up to me, she asked me what I was wearing and I looked at her confused. “ Clothes “, I said and looked over to Chris, still confused. “Amari, we’re going to dinner with my colleagues from work, and you won’t go with me looking like this”, Mia said. I looked at myself and I kinda agreed with her because what I wore was opposite of what Mia wore. I was on a joggers, crop top and a jacket, with sneakers and judging from Mia’s fit, I’m sure the security wouldn’t let me into the resturant. Mia dragged me upstairs to her room and soon dinner gowns were flying around. I couldn’t decide on what to wear, they all looked like I’d be uncomfortable in them. I finally chose a black dress with a slit at the side. Mia gave me silver jewelry and a pair of silver heels to match. The shoes looked like they would cost a fortune. Mia confirmed my thought by saying that I should be careful with them, or she would get new ones with my tuition fees. I changed into the dress and Mia proceeded to give me a little makeover, I protested but I knew it was a waste of time. Chris was waiting for us downstairs and I immediately caught the way he looked at me, the same way he did when I got home this evening. He quickly cleared his throat and walked out with Mia and I following behind. The drive to the restaurant was quiet and awkward; this was the first time the three of us sat together in a car. I expected Mia and Chris to have a little discussion along the way, wasn’t that what couples do? Or was the rift from before Mia traveled still there? Maybe they just don’t talk when driving. I busied myself with the “teach me anatomy” app on my phone. The restaurant was the most beautiful I’d ever seen, the cars parked out front and the people walking in and out made me understand why Mia had insisted I put on a dress. The ambience of the place was just so relaxing, I thought about being rich myself and not just comfortable, so that I could afford to go to places like this. Inside the restaurant was more beautiful, the waiters were all neatly dressed, the aesthetics were just wonderful. I bet their meals would be nice too. Mia located her colleagues, they welcomed us and we all sat down. The gourmet was wonderful. I couldn’t wait to get started on the meals, but I had to keep my cool, else Mia would kill me for making her look bad. They talked about work-related things and I just smiled, while wishing we could eat already. Finally time for food came and I wasn’t disappointed, the meals were splendid. I could give the chef all of my savings, I’m kidding lol. I tried a little bit of almost all the meals even though Mia’s stare always gave me the daggers each time I looked at her. I could tell that Chris wasn’t really comfortable but he kept on smiling and nodding. I didn’t notice when Mia left the table but I was pressed and wanted to use the restroom. I approached one of the waiters and asked for directions. I entered one of the toilets for ladies and eased myself, I was drying my hands when a man came out of one of the toilets. I looked closely and recognized him as one of Mia’s colleagues. What was he doing in a ladies’ restroom? I was still thinking about it when Mia came out of the same toilet, looking all disheveled. She was surprised to see me, and trust me, I was even more surprised to see her. “ Mari, I can explain “, she said after me as I started out of the bathroom. “ What did I just see?” I said to myself. I was quiet the rest of the dinner. I wasn’t just quiet, I didn’t hear anything anyone at the table said until it was time to leave. I couldn’t even process my thoughts. Why did Mia come out of the same toilet as her male colleague who wasn’t even supposed to be in a female restroom in the first place? What the hell was going on?! The drive to the restaurant was quiet but believe me when I say the drive home was quieter. I couldn’t even press my phone, I was just quiet and staring out the window. I ran out of the car immediately Chris parked the car at the garage. I sat on my bed and replayed the toilet incident in my head. I wasn’t mistaken, Mia and that guy came out of the same toilet. What was going on with Mia and that man? What about Chris? Was she cheating on him? The colleague wasn’t even good-looking. I know so because he kept staring at me throughout the dinner, it’s how I was able to recognize him when he came out of the toilet. I heard a knock on my door. I knew it was Mia, it had to be. I already knew what she wanted to say, what else would it be other than it wasn’t what I thought and the guy was just a friend, probably got lost looking for the male restroom. She entered and sat on my bed looking all guilty. I couldn’t even look at her. I had known Mia to hook up with different guys when we were little, but that was years ago and she was married now. I didn’t want to give her the chance to lie to me, so I spoke first, “Mia why?”, “how could you do that to Chris?”. She apologized and said she was sorry. She claimed he had deceived her and that she got weak and agreed. She also blamed it on the wine that was served at dinner which she hardly touched. She tried to make me promise her not to tell Chris and also swore it wouldn’t happen again. I didn’t promise not to tell Chris but she left because she knew I wouldn’t, besides what was I going to tell him and how would I even tell him? I just felt bad for Chris and guilty too beacuse I knew what was happening but I would never tell him. I thought back to the call Mia was on when we went out, it all made sense now. Mia had been cheating on Chris, but why? Chris was rich and handsome, and he was caring as far as I know. What did Mia want?
