CHAPTER TWO
AMARI’S POV:
The taxi that was to take me to the airport was already parked outside. Mum gave me a long hard hug as she gently sobbed, she knew she wouldn’t be seeing me in a very long time as my desire to be away from them since I was little had never been a secret. I don’t know how and why but Dad was home and was standing by the side watching us, he seemed sober. I could see that he wanted to say something when I turned to enter the taxi, I couldn’t tell if he would miss me or not, maybe just maybe he would.
They waved until the car was out of sight. I wondered what made him sober by this time, did mum make him do this, just to see me off? it was very unlikely.
The airport was outside town, I watched as the car drove past familiar buildings. I was leaving my whole life behind and starting afresh, not so fresh because my sister was still going to be a part of my life but I had made mental plans on how to avoid her, almost throughout my stay with her.
The ride to the airport was too fast, I loved making plans and reflecting on past events in vehicles as they moved. I sighed as I got out of the taxi. This was my first time in an airport, the whole scenario was new to me and I instantly became confused and didn’t know what to do. I decided to ask a stranger for help, It definitely wouldn’t be a man. The first girl I saw looked too sassy, so I didn’t stop her. I knew I eventually had to stop being picky and ask someone so that I wouldn’t miss my flight.
I saw someone who looked simple enough and approached her,
“Hello,” I said.
“ Hi, ” she replied smiling softly,
I knew I had approached the right person. “ My name is Amari,“ I said,
“ Kayla “ she replied. I told her it was my first flight ever and had no idea what to do, she asked me where I was headed and we were both excited to know we were on the same flight to New York. Kayla and I clicked immediately, was she going to be my friend?
After going through all the checks, we found our seats and were soon seated comfortably. Kayla was two seats away from me, I felt sad which was a strange feeling because, “Why would I feel sad about not sitting close to someone I met a few minutes ago?”.
The air hostesses gave a few instructions and soon announced the flight was about to take off. I got a seat by the window and I won’t lie, I was a little excited being on a flight for the first time.
As the plane taxied down the runway and lifted off into the sky, I felt a rush of adrenaline, unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I soon felt better as soon as we were up in the air. Looking out the window, I was treated to a breathtaking view of the world below. I thought of the long 4hrs flight to New York and what I’d do during this time. The hostesses soon served snacks, I was glad because I barely ate anything this morning. My excitement was soon cut short, the food was bad! Bad, worse, worst!! I had always thought people exaggerated whenever they talked about plane food.
“This flight was going to be a long one.”
I put on my phone and searched “ BOAT UNIVERSITY “ on Google. Boat University wasn’t my first choice, I had always wanted to go to ” BALE “but Mum had said the fees were outrageous. I didn’t put up too much fuss because Boat was also a really good school and was very affordable. The school was beautiful, I hadn’t taken time to check it out because I might not like it and not want to go there anymore. My sister had studied there and graduated, now I was going to the same school. I kept my phone and I soon started imagining how my future would look like, did I want to become a doctor? I had nothing else in mind but I couldn’t even remember what motivated me to want to become a doctor. Well, no backing down now, this wasn’t the latest challenge in my life and I’d have to see it through.
The pilot’s landing announcement woke me up, I couldn’t even remember when I slept but it looked like I’ve been asleep for a long time, nevertheless, I was happy the flight was over, all I could think about was food.
Amari heard her name as soon as she picked up her luggage and turned to see Kayla,
“ Hey,” she voiced.
“ How was your flight? “ she added, her tone warm.
“it was fine.“I responded.
We walked out of the airport together. Kayla had also come to New York for college. After changing contacts, we both headed our separate ways. I hailed a taxi and read out the address my sister had given me.
The drive to my sister’s house took 20 minutes. I was finally home, well not home but a place where I could rest and take off these shoes that were about to kill my toes.
My sister and her husband came out to welcome me, they shouldn’t have, especially Chris. Their house was a lot more than I anticipated, I knew Chris was rich given the context of their wedding but I just thought it was my sister who liked to make everything perfect. The house and the two cars parked in the garage said it all, I was impressed, I won’t lie. My sister and I hugged in the weirdest way and talked briefly about home while we went into the house. Her husband to help me with a bag but I refused and told him I was good, this was our first conversation ever. I hadn’t even looked at him before until now, he is a tall man with a strong build, describing him this much makes me want to scold myself but I’ll just admit that Chris is a very fine man. I wonder if he was okay with me moving in, my sister said he was right. He shouldn’t worry too much because he wouldn’t be seeing much of me.
Mia showed me to my room and also introduced me to the househelp. My room was too pretty, typical of Mia to live in a luxurious home. The bed was made for me, it had to be because how did it suit my taste so well?? I brought out my phone to call Mum. “Hello Mum”, I said once she answered the call. We spoke briefly and I told her I wanted to wash up and have dinner as I was famished, she made me promise to call her later when I was more settled in before hanging up.
While at dinner, Chris tried to make conversation but I wasn’t having it, I wanted him to see that I wanted us to stay clear of each other’s paths. Mia was too busy on her phone to notice the awkward air. I finished eating and made my way to my room to fulfill my promise to Mum and head to bed after the very long day.
I could feel Chris staring at me as I went up the stairs, I know what he was probably thinking, “ this girl ain’t nothing like my wife “. Well, I hope we don’t get on each other’s nerves.
