CHAPTER FOUR AMARI’S POV: Kayla waved just as I sighted her, today would be the first time I’d see her since we both went our separate ways after we arrived in New York but we had kept in touch via pal touch. She looked too excited for today’s class, maybe it was because it was our first day of school. We happened to be in the same department, Kayla and I had a lot in common except that she’s a lover girl and I just didn’t get it, it was cringe. The first two classes went by smoothly until a guy tried talking to me but the look on my face made him rethink his decision. My sister had always said I acted like a little beast but I always retorted by saying ‘I was prettier than she was,’ she knew, everyone knew I was, I just wasn’t a girly girl. I guess you could call me - A pretty demon. Soon enough, it was break time so I decided to go around my faculty, I needed to get familiar with the environment. Boat was a fine place and I knew I’d have a good time here. I made sure to look for good hideouts as I’d always want an escape place from home. Still in thought, my eyes caught a figure ahead. It was Kayla, she was talking to a guy from afar, they looked like they were having a good conversation. My antisocial self immediately looked away, I hated unnecessary attention. I continued my tour around the campus, my space was a priority. Not long after I left, Kayla’s text popped up “Hey, meet me at the school entrance.” Seeing this text, I grumbled to myself, she was texting me after giggling with a boy, “Disgusting!“ I let out. I left to join her at the school entrance. The bus stop was just outside the school gate so we got there quickly enough. On getting there, we immediately joined others on the line and waited our turn to get on the bus. The ride was quiet and a little awkward, I didn’t want any boy juice to rub off on me. Finally, I got to my bus stop, I got down and waved Kayla goodbye. Chris was in the living room working on his laptop when I entered the house, I rolled my eyes increasing my pace as I walked past him. “Amari!” I heard him call my name and I reluctantly stopped, what did he want? “How was your first day ?” he asked. I grumbled an answer and didn’t wait to hear him say anything else, why was he talking to me! I only stopped when he called because I wanted to give him that much regard as I lived in his house but that was it, I wanted nothing else. I don’t even know why I hated him, he honestly seemed like a good guy but I wasn’t ready to find out. Why was he home early? what did he even do for a living? I knew nothing about this man but as far as I knew, he was rich. He might aswell be a ‘woman’ organ harvestor, because as far as I am concerned men hate women and I hate them too. Getting to my room, I dived my bed and of course, it welcomed me warmly, my only companion. I was getting used to this house, I had a friend, and I was away from the disgusting entanglement my mom had. Naomi the househelp, was my friend. she called me her friend so I guess she was my friend, right? She was like my mum here in New York. Talking about mum, I haven’t spoken to her in a while, “I’ll call her later,” I dropped. I kinda miss her, my mind drifted. I plugged in my earphones, and opened my notebook to take a look at what we had done in class today. I loved studying, it was one of the ways I could forget about whatever was happening. ‘The courses looked interesting, the first lecturer introduced us to anatomy, and I learned about body planes for the first time today.’ I thought to myself as I looked forward to my journey in med school, “ Doctor Amari”, I said aloud and smiled. Almost immeeiately, I heard my sister’s car pull in. We hadn’t talked much since I moved in and it wasn’t subnormal, it’s always been this way. I loved her as my sister but that was just it and I’d never tell her that I did. “Eew”, the word sounded sour in my mouth. My mind went back to our childhood when my room door suddenly opened, it was Mia. I was surprised to see her as it was the first time she had come to my room since I moved in. “ Hey b***h “, she said. I just looked at her and waited for her to state her mission in my room, she knew I liked my space so it had to be something important that brought her here. “You never change, well, I would want you to go to the store with me later.” She addressed. I declined at first but I realized I didn’t know places in the city and this would be a good opportunity. I told her to let me know when she was ready to leave. Soon enough, she returned to my room and informed me it was time go. Mia was on a phone call throughout the drive, I rolled my eyes each time she said “ I love you too”. she just left Chris not long ago for crying out loud! why were they on such a long call just a few minutes of being apart?? I thought back to how I hadn’t seen them have as much as a 2-minute conversation since I arrived but I wouldn’t be too sure because I was always in my room, maybe they had been having a couple of fight but had recently settled it, either way, I didn’t care. I made sure to take a mental picture of the streets we passed and the very important landmarks. A cafe caught my eye, the sign read “ Good delight”, I wanted to go in immediately but it’d have to wait. Mia pulled into the garage of a Versace store, I waited for her to get out of the car before doing the same. The store looked more elegant on the inside, ’Mia never misses’ I thought to myself. The total amount of things Mia bought made me reconfirm how rich Chris was, Mia had bought me a skirt and a small Versace purse, she said it was for my birthday which had just passed a few days ago. I thanked her and smiled at her for the first time in years. These gifts would be the most expensive items I owned. We went to a restaurant after that and had dinner before heading home. I started towards my room immediately after we arrived home. Mia walked past Chris without saying a word and I wondered if they had had another fight on the phone while we were out. Well, it wasn’t my business, I smiled at how peaceful my life was. A life without love, as peaceful as ever. Kayla called me and started telling me about the guy she had been talking to during the day, “ dear lord”, I said to myself as I listened to her talk nonstop. I tried asking her about school severally to change the topic but she wouldn’t budge. I can’t believe I just listened to Kayla talk about a man nonstop for an hour, ‘I’m getting soft.’ A knock played on my door, it was Naomi, I asked her to come in. She asked about my first day of school and I told her everything in detail. “Finally! someone that actually care’s.” She asked me to help her out in the kitchen after and I couldn’t say no, I didn’t like the idea of being in the kitchen too often but I was happy to learn a few recipes from Naomi. I never cooked at home, mum always took care of the kitchen. I guessed Naomi was hired because Mia didn’t know how to cook, I was happy to learn because I would be able to take care of myself and my cats or dogs in the future.
