The marriage contract

The next morning, Elena arrived earlier than usual not because she had extra work ,though there was always work but because she needed the quiet. The office before eight had a different energy… The lights were softer, the air still, the constant chatter of employees replaced with silence. She placed her bag down at her desk and powered on her computer, mentally organizing the long list of tasks waiting for her. Ever since the conversation in Adrian’s office the previous day, something had shifted, it wasn’t obvious.. Nothing in the company had changed but she could feel it. He was watching her.!! And strangely… she found herself watching him too. A notification popped onto her screen. “New assignment: Executive review preparation”. Her eyebrows lifted slightly, Executive review projects were usually handled by senior analysts, not interns. She opened the file and scanned the details. Three client proposals; Financial revisions , Market summaries and Presentation formatting. Her lips pressed together. This wasn’t normal intern work. This was a test. She didn’t need to guess who assigned it. Across the office floor, Adrian stepped out of the elevator at that exact moment, his presence commanding immediate attention without him saying a word. Employees straightened slightly as he walked past, Elena kept her eyes on her screen but she felt it; The subtle shift in the room whenever he was near. A few minutes later, a message appeared on her screen again. “Mr. Cole would like the revised documents in his office.” She exhaled quietly. Of course. Adrian’s office was exactly as she remembered: spacious, calm, intimidating in its simplicity. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the London skyline, the early morning light spilling across the polished desk. Elena knocked. “Come in.” His voice was calm, controlled. She stepped inside and placed the tablet containing the files on the desk. “I reviewed the documents,” she said. “Some projections needed correcting.” Adrian didn’t look up immediately. When he did, his eyes went straight to the tablet in her hands. “Show me.” She stepped closer to the desk. Closer than she intended. When she placed the tablet down, their hands brushed briefly. Just a light contact. Barely a second. But Elena felt it immediately. A strange warmth shot through her fingers, unexpected and sharp. She withdrew her hand quickly, pretending nothing had happened. Adrian noticed. Of course he did. His expression didn’t change, but his gaze lingered a fraction longer than necessary before shifting to the screen. “You adjusted the numbers here,” he said. “Yes,” she replied, leaning slightly forward to point at the projection column. Their shoulders were almost touching now. The proximity felt… dangerous. Not physically. But mentally. Elena forced herself to focus on the presentation. “The previous data underestimated the quarterly growth,” she explained. “If the client sees that mistake, they’ll question the entire proposal.” Adrian studied the numbers carefully. Then he nodded once. “Correct.” Elena blinked. That single word felt oddly satisfying. Most executives would simply take the correction and move on. But Adrian acknowledged it. She straightened slightly. “Anything else?” He looked up at her then. Really looked. For a moment neither of them spoke. From this distance he could see the small details most people missed: the faint crease in her brow when she concentrated, the way she held herself with quiet confidence despite being the youngest person in the department. “You handled the sabotage cleverly,” he said suddenly. Elena’s eyes widened a little. “We already discussed that.” “Yes,” he replied calmly. “But I never said I disapproved.” Her breath caught for a second. “You didn’t say you approved either.” A faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. “You’re observant.” Silence settled between them again. Elena became suddenly aware of how close she was standing to his desk. Too close. She stepped back slightly. Adrian noticed that too. “You’re adapting well to the new department,” he said, changing the subject. “It’s more work,” she replied. “That was intentional.” “I assumed so.” His eyebrow lifted slightly. “And yet you didn’t complain.” Elena shrugged lightly. “Complaints don’t improve performance.” Adrian studied her again. Most employees would have been frustrated by the sudden workload increase. She treated it like a challenge. Interesting. Very interesting. “Bring the final report this afternoon,” he said. Elena nodded. As she reached for the tablet, their fingers brushed again. This time neither of them moved immediately. Just a second. Maybe two. Then Elena quickly picked up the device. Her heartbeat had quickened again. Ridiculous. It was just contact. Nothing more. “Anything else?” she asked, trying to sound perfectly composed. Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair. “For now, no.” She turned toward the door. Halfway there, he spoke again. “Elena.” She stopped. “Yes?” “You said something in the elevator that day.” Her stomach tightened. “I said a lot of things.” “You said powerful men misuse authority.” Her cheeks warmed slightly. “And?” she asked cautiously. “And I’m curious,” he said quietly. She turned slightly to face him again. “Curious about what?” His gaze held hers. “What you’ll do if one of those powerful men decides to test you.” The question hung in the air. Elena considered it for a moment. Then she answered calmly. “I’ll adapt.” Adrian’s lips curved slightly. That answer seemed to please him. “Good.” She nodded once and left the office…, Outside, Elena walked back to her desk slowly. Her mind replayed the entire conversation, the assignments, the way he watched her, the way his tone changed when he spoke to her and that strange moment when their fingers touched. She shook the thought away quickly… This was work.. Nothing else.!! She said to herself. Across the office, Adrian watched her through the glass wall, He hadn’t intended to notice the small reactions she tried to hide but he had and the more he observed her, the clearer it became. Elena Monroe was not just another intern trying to survive corporate competition, she was something far more interesting and if he wasn’t careful…This game between them might become something far more complicated than he intended.
