The room felt colder without him.
Isabella sat upright on the massive bed, the sheets still tangled around her bare skin. Her body hummed with the memory of his touch, but her heart raced with dread. Damian’s last words—the war just came to my doorstep—echoed in her mind, refusing to fade.
She wrapped the sheet tighter around herself, trying to steady her breathing. For the first time since meeting Damian, she realized the depth of the world she had willingly stepped into. A world where love burned alongside danger, where a single phone call could rip apart fragile peace.
From beyond the walls, faint sounds drifted in—shouts, hurried footsteps, the sharp crackle of radios. The estate, which had seemed like a palace of power hours ago, now felt like a fortress under siege.
“Stay here,” he had ordered. His voice had carried no room for argument.
But the longer she sat there, the more unbearable the silence became.
Her mind churned. What if he doesn’t come back? What if this is the night I lose him?
The thought made her chest tighten painfully. She had barely admitted her feelings, barely allowed herself to surrender—and now fate threatened to rip it all away.
She slid off the bed, her bare feet meeting the cool floor. Damian’s shirt lay crumpled nearby, and she pulled it over her head. The fabric dwarfed her, but the faint scent of him—cedar, smoke, danger—wrapped around her like armor.
Creeping toward the door, she pressed her ear against it. The voices outside were clearer now, clipped and tense.
“South wall breached—”
“Secure the eastern gates!”
“Damian said no one enters or leaves!”
Her pulse hammered. They were under attack.
Stay here.
But something inside her rebelled. She had never been the kind of woman to sit idly by while the world crumbled around her. Damian might see her as fragile, but she wasn’t. She couldn’t be—not if she was truly going to stand beside him.
Her hand trembled as she gripped the doorknob. Just as she twisted it open a crack, a voice made her freeze.
“You shouldn’t be out here.”
Isabella spun around, her heart leaping to her throat.
A man stood in the corner of the room.
He was tall, dressed in black, and his face was hidden beneath a mask. She hadn’t heard him enter. Panic surged—how long had he been there?
“Who are you?” she demanded, her voice shaking but fierce.
The man tilted his head. “Someone who knows you don’t belong in his world.”
Her stomach dropped. “Damian?” she whispered, as if invoking his name could summon him.
But the intruder chuckled darkly. “Damian can’t protect you from everything. You’re a liability, sweetheart. A weakness he can’t afford.”
Before she could scream, the man lunged. Isabella darted back, snatching a glass from the nightstand and hurling it at him. It shattered against his shoulder, buying her just enough time to sprint toward the bathroom. She slammed the door, locking it as her chest heaved.
Her hands shook violently as she searched for anything to defend herself. Her eyes landed on a heavy candleholder. Clutching it tightly, she pressed her back against the cold tile wall.
The doorknob rattled.
“Open the door, Isabella,” the voice taunted. “You think he’ll forgive himself when he finds your body here? Or will this be the lesson he needs?”
Tears stung her eyes, but rage burned hotter. She wasn’t going to die cowering.
Suddenly, gunfire cracked outside the hall, followed by shouts. The masked man cursed under his breath. The doorknob stilled.
Isabella held her breath, straining to hear. Heavy footsteps retreated from the bathroom door. Then silence.
Her knees nearly gave way with relief. But she couldn’t stay hidden. Not now.
Summoning her courage, she pushed the door open slowly. The bedroom was empty, but the faint smell of smoke and gunpowder lingered. Her pulse raced. Whoever that man was, he hadn’t been one of Damian’s.
She crept toward the hall, gripping the candleholder like a weapon. Each step was careful, quiet.
The corridor stretched before her, dimly lit by wall sconces. Voices echoed faintly—Damian’s voice among them, barking orders with lethal calm.
Relief flooded her. He was alive.
“Secure the west entrance! No one leaves until I have a name!” Damian’s command cut through the chaos like a blade.
Isabella’s knees nearly buckled with the urge to run to him, to bury herself in his arms and confess what had just happened. But something stopped her.
The masked man’s words echoed: You’re a weakness he can’t afford.
Was it true? Was she nothing more than a liability in his violent empire?
Her heart ached. She wanted to be more than that. She wanted to be someone who could stand by him, not someone he constantly had to shield.
As she lingered in the shadows, torn between fear and determination, Damian’s eyes suddenly lifted. He saw her standing there.
For the first time since she’d met him, the fury in his gaze softened—replaced by something raw, something vulnerable.
“Isabella…” His voice was low, strained. He strode toward her, his hands closing over her shoulders as if to confirm she was real. “I told you to stay inside.”
Tears pricked her eyes, but she lifted her chin. “Someone was in the room, Damian. A masked man. He said I was your weakness.”
The temperature around them seemed to drop. Damian’s jaw clenched, his grip tightening protectively.
“No one touches what’s mine,” he growled, his voice laced with lethal promise. “If they think you’re my weakness, I’ll show them you’re my strength.”
And as he pulled her against him, Isabella realized with startling clarity: this was no longer just a dangerous love affair. She was already tangled in his world of blood and vengeance—and there was no turning back.
