The Watcher In The Window (Ep 3)

930 Words
Lena barely slept the night after finding Dr. Grant’s notebook. The words about the clock striking twelve and the watcher awakening echoed in her mind. Time was running out. Two nights. She had two nights to figure out how to stop Dr. Grant’s machine before it was too late. The next day, Lena and Mia met at the library again, this time to decode the rest of Dr. Grant’s notebook. As Lena flipped through the pages, one entry caught her eye: "The final symbol is hidden in plain sight. It can only be seen by the one who dares to face the night. The third night will reveal the truth, and the watcher will be free." Lena’s fingers shook. The third night. Tonight. “That’s tonight,” Mia said, her voice low. “We need to act fast.” Lena nodded, feeling a knot form in her stomach. They knew the machine had something to do with controlling time, but they still didn’t understand how it all worked. The notebook was filled with complex equations, but there was one symbol, one clue that kept reappearing. It was a circle with a line running through it, like the symbol for a clock. “We have to go back to the house,” Lena said suddenly. “The machine. I think the final clue is there.” Mia hesitated but then nodded. “Let’s go. We don’t have much time.” The rain began to pour again as Lena and Mia made their way back to the abandoned house. The air was thick with tension, and the only sound was the rhythm of their footsteps. As they approached the house, the eerie feeling that had haunted Lena before returned. The house felt different now—almost alive, as though it was watching them. Inside, the machine was humming quietly, its gears turning, and the strange, flickering lights casting shadows across the room. But this time, something was different. The machine was no longer just a collection of wires and metal; it seemed to pulse with energy, as if it had a mind of its own. Lena stood frozen in front of the machine. She had seen it before, but now she understood it in a way she hadn’t before. The symbol. It was on the machine, right in the center. The circle with a line running through it. It was part of the mechanism, but it was incomplete. “This is it,” Lena whispered, her heart racing. “This is the final symbol.” But just as she reached out to touch it, the room grew cold, and the lights flickered out. The machine’s hum grew louder, and Lena felt something shift in the air. A voice, cold and hollow, echoed from the shadows. “You shouldn’t have come back.” Lena spun around, her breath catching in her throat. The figure from the window, the watcher, was standing in the doorway. It was no longer a shadow; it had form now, a tall, thin figure with glowing eyes that seemed to pierce the darkness. “Mia, get back!” Lena shouted, grabbing her friend’s arm and pulling her away from the machine. But the watcher stepped forward, blocking their way. “You’ve unlocked the symbol,” the watcher said, its voice raspy. “Now you’ve sealed your fate.” Lena’s heart pounded. “What do you want from us?” The watcher tilted its head, as if considering her question. “What I want is what you’ve taken. The final piece. The key to time itself.” Suddenly, the machine began to shake violently, its gears grinding against each other. The walls of the house started to tremble, and the floor beneath Lena’s feet felt like it was shifting. It was as if the house itself was coming to life, reacting to the machine’s power. Mia screamed. “Lena, we need to stop it!” Lena glanced at the final symbol on the machine again. She could feel it—this was the key. But it wasn’t just the symbol that was important; it was what the symbol could unlock. The line running through the circle—what if it wasn’t just a part of the machine? What if it was the key to stopping it? Lena took a deep breath and pushed her hand into the machine’s center, where the symbol was. A shock of cold energy shot through her body, but she didn’t pull away. She pressed harder, focusing on the line that ran through the circle, trying to visualize it unlocking something. Then, with a deafening crash, the machine stopped. The lights flickered back on, and the watcher screamed as it faded into the shadows, disappearing like smoke in the wind. The room went silent. The shaking stopped. The house was still again. Lena pulled her hand back from the machine, her body shaking with adrenaline. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. Had she stopped it? Or had something even worse been unleashed? Mia stood beside her, wide-eyed and breathless. “What did you do?” “I—I think I stopped the machine,” Lena said, her voice trembling. “But I’m not sure what it means. The watcher is gone... for now. But something tells me this isn’t over.” As Lena and Mia stood in the quiet room, a chilling thought crossed Lena’s mind. If the machine could control time, what had they really just done? And was it truly over, or had they only just begun to uncover the terrifying truth?
