Chapter Twelve - Watching

1008 Words
I wake up to my alarm going off. I sit up quickly scanning my room. A feeling like I was being watched creeping over me. I can’t see anything, but it’s still dark enough there are shadows all around my room. I jump up from the bed and run to the switch turning the lights on. Seeing absolutely nothing. Jesus Bianca, calm down. I take a few deep breaths. Shaking off the left over sleep in my body, I start to get ready for school. * Rushing downstairs to try and shovel down some breakfast I hear a knock at the door. Damn Jacob’s early. I run to the door and swing it open and have a coffee cup and a white bag being held out to me. Jacob is standing there smiling. “I brought you breakfast, I hope that’s okay.” “Oh wow, thanks Jake! Come inside. We can sit down while I eat.” He follows me inside shutting the door behind him. We sit down at the dining table. I open the bag and pull out a giant banana nut muffin. “I remember those used to be your favorite. Hopefully it still is.” I look up and smile at him. “They are actually, thank you.” He looks so bashful. It’s sweet that he remembered something from so long ago. I didn’t even realize I was important enough for him to remember. He only saw me one month out of the year. We make a little small talk as I eat my muffin and drink my coffee. Jacob eating his own double chocolate chip muffin. Guessing he’s got a bit of sweet tooth. I throw our trash away and run to brush the coffee off my teeth. Letting him know I’ll be right back. When I finish I come back out and see he’s no longer downstairs but standing in my bedroom. He’s looking at some of my books on my new bookshelves. The few I brought with me. The rest will be here Friday. “Jacob?” “You really do like reading.” He says with a laugh. “Oh yea, I love how it can take me to a different world. There were a few times growing up, it was the place I felt safest.” He turns at that. Looking at me, and stepping forward. “You’ll always be safe with me.” “Oh..uh. Thank you Jake.” I whisper. Looking away, to the floor. Anywhere but his eyes. If he keeps staring at me like that, I’ll be sure to fall into them. I feel his hand under my chin, pulling my face up to look at him. “I mean it Bianca. Always.” He hasn’t let go of my chin, and he’s leaning forward now. My breathing coming in short pants. I know I should stop him. But I don’t want too. My body heats, feeling that electric buzz under my skin I always feel when he touches me. My eyes slam shut, just wanting to let myself fall for once. Let myself have this moment. Then I feel the softest brush of lips against my cheek. Light as a feather. My eyes snapping open I see Jacob smiling at me. Not his usual cocky grin, but a soft smile. Letting me know he wasn’t teasing me. “I told you, I’m not going anywhere. And I won’t rush you.” He whispers. He steps back, grabbing hold of my hand and starts pulling me towards my bedroom door. My heart slamming against my rib cage. I don’t know if I’m disappointed he didn’t kiss me or what; but I feel myself frown regardless. We make it downstairs and he picks up my bags for me, heading to the front door. * The whole way to school we sit in comfortable silence. I think he’s giving me time to think. Which I need plenty of time for. I’m extremely conflicted. I like Jacob a lot, but I have feelings for Edward too. Which is odd because I don’t even know him that well. I also need to figure out why he was in my room last night. When I got up this morning I checked the note he had slipped into my pocket. All it said was “see you tonight.” That told me absolutely nothing, or why he was there. So I plan to find out today. A few minutes later, we pull in the parking lot at school. I look over at Jake, smiling. I decide to be brave for once in my life and lean across the console and kiss him on the cheek. He looks shocked, even though he’s smiling “What was that for?” “For being so nice to me since I’ve gotten here. I really appreciate it Jake.” “You don’t have to thank me for that Bianca. It’s what any good person would do.” “Well, I still appreciate it. I appreciate you.” Jacob just smiles at me. He gets out of the truck and comes around to my side to open the door for me. I figured after yesterday’s debacle I would just let him help me. I unbuckle and stand on the step and instead of backing Jake takes a step closer. Looking up at me he slides his hands up my hips to my underarms and lifts me. Putting me on the ground next to him. “Jake you can’t do that! I’m too heavy!” I say flustered as all hell. Because although I liked that. Probably far too much. I know I’m too heavy. “Bianca please. You are not too heavy. You aren’t heavy at all.” He says while grabbing my bags. “Jake please.” “No Bi, stop. I don’t want to hear you say that again. End of story.” “Oh…oh okay.” I stutter out. Blushing. He hands me my bags and we start heading into school.
