Emily stood in front of the full-length mirror, barely recognizing the woman staring back at her. The navy-blue evening dress hugged her figure perfectly, flowing smoothly to just above her ankles. It was simple yet elegant, the kind of dress she had only seen in magazines. Her hair was styled in soft waves, and the subtle makeup made her eyes appear brighter.
She felt like she was wearing someone else’s life.
“Do I really look okay?” she asked, turning slightly as Mrs. Collins adjusted the fabric at her shoulder.
“You look beautiful, Mrs. Reed,” Mrs. Collins said warmly. “Mr. Reed will be very pleased.”
Emily wasn’t sure why the thought made her nervous.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in,” she called.
Alexander stepped inside, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His presence instantly filled the room. For a brief moment, his eyes rested on her, and Emily noticed the faintest pause in his usually calm expression.
“You’re ready,” he said.
“That’s all?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “No ‘you look nice’?”
“You look appropriate for the event,” he replied.
Emily shook her head, hiding a smile. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
He extended his arm slightly. “We should leave. The dinner starts soon.”
Her nerves returned as she followed him downstairs. The car was already waiting outside. When Alexander opened the door for her, she hesitated before stepping in, still adjusting to these small gestures.
The drive to the hotel was quiet. City lights blurred past the window as Emily clasped her hands together.
“I’m nervous,” she admitted.
“There’s nothing to be nervous about,” Alexander replied calmly.
“That’s easy for you to say. You do this all the time.”
“Just stay beside me and smile,” he said. “I’ll handle everything else.”
She nodded, though her heart continued racing.
The hotel entrance was brightly lit, with staff greeting guests as they arrived. As soon as the car stopped, Emily’s breath caught. This was far more glamorous than she expected.
Alexander stepped out and offered his hand. She placed her hand in his, feeling the steadiness of his grip. It helped, just slightly.
Inside, the ballroom was stunning. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and elegant tables filled the room. Soft music played in the background as well-dressed guests mingled.
Several heads turned when they entered.
“Alexander,” a tall man approached with a friendly smile. “I heard you got married. I didn’t believe it until now.”
Alexander nodded. “This is my wife, Emily.”
Emily smiled politely. “Nice to meet you.”
“Congratulations,” the man said, though his curious glance lingered on her. “You certainly surprised everyone.”
“That wasn’t my intention,” Alexander replied smoothly.
More people approached, offering greetings and subtle questions. Emily tried to remember names, but they blurred together. She focused on maintaining her composure, just as Alexander had instructed.
At one point, a woman in a striking red dress walked toward them. Her heels clicked sharply against the floor.
“Alexander,” she said, her tone smooth but cool. “You didn’t mention you were getting married.”
“I didn’t think it required announcement,” he replied.
Her gaze moved to Emily, assessing. “You must be Emily.”
“Yes,” Emily answered calmly.
The woman smiled, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m Victoria. Alexander and I go way back.”
Emily sensed the tension but kept her expression polite. “Nice to meet you.”
Victoria looked at Alexander again. “We should catch up sometime.”
“Perhaps,” he replied, clearly uninterested.
After she walked away, Emily leaned slightly closer. “She doesn’t like me.”
“She doesn’t like losing attention,” he answered quietly.
Emily exhaled slowly.
Dinner began shortly after. They sat at a table with several business partners. Emily listened as they discussed projects and investments. Though she didn’t understand everything, she stayed attentive.
At one point, Alexander gently placed his hand over hers under the table. She stiffened slightly, surprised, but realized he was maintaining the appearance. Still, the warmth of his touch sent a strange flutter through her chest.
When the event ended, they walked toward the exit together.
Suddenly, camera flashes lit up the entrance.
Emily froze. “What’s happening?”
“Press,” Alexander said calmly.
Photographers called his name, snapping pictures rapidly. His hand rested lightly on her back, guiding her forward.
“Smile,” he murmured.
She did, though her pulse raced. The moment lasted only seconds before they reached the car.
Once inside, Emily let out a long breath. “That was overwhelming.”
“You handled it well,” he said.
She glanced at him. “Another compliment?”
“Yes.”
She smiled faintly, leaning back against the seat. Outside, the city lights passed by again.
Tonight had been her first step into his world.
And she realized she was no longer just pretending — she was slowly becoming part of it.
