Marta Mendoza read about the brutal death of the Russian in the local newspaper. There was also quite a long account of Rita Serrano's possible part in it.
She wondered if Rita were capable of murder and s****l mutilation. She didn't know.
She worried much over a possible attack on Mexico City by guerrillas from the mountains. The whole world seemed to be in a hell of a mess, and she wondered tremblingly what the result would be.
While she had gone to bed with tourists in Acapulco, she didn't really know many Americans. Actually, none except Rob Webster. She wished to talk to him. She wanted to know what the position of the United States would be in case of an attack on the Mexican government.
