The Test Results

Steve, Leah and I were both sitting in the dining room without saying anything until finally Leah said, “Luna you don’t have to read them yet if you’re not ready.” I then said, “no I want to I just needed to take a moment to think.” Steve then said, “no matter what those test results say we are going to be here for you.” I then opened the letter and stared at it for a while. Until finally I say, “dear miss Covington here are the results of your DNA test which reads following, from your maternal side you have Henry Covington- grandfather, unknown grandmother and as you would already know Ashley Covington is your mother. Now for your paternal side Michael Johnson- Grandfather.” Before I could say anything, else Steve said, “did you just say Michael Johnson is your grandfather.”

I then said, “yes, I did why do you know him?” As I looked up at Steve, I could see tears in his eyes and he said, “Michael was my father.” I then quickly looked back to the letter, and I kept reading from where I was reading and I said, “now we know that you want to know who your father is so here is what we have found, Steve Johnson- father.” I then dropped the letter and looked at both Leah and Steve. Steve then said, “Luna I am so sorry I wasn’t there to watch you grow up I didn’t even know that your mum was pregnant.” Leah then said, “Luna I am so sorry we didn’t know.”

I then said, “its fine it wasn’t your fault I actually went back to my house with Leo and we found my mums video camera and we watched the first few minutes of the first video on it saying that if my daddy knew that she was certain he would have been there for me.” Steve then said, “well she was telling the truth even though I was nineteen when you were born, I would have been the best father to you.” I then got up and I ran to him, and I wrapped my arms around him, and I said, “I am glad that it turned out that you were my father.” Steve then hugged me back and after a few minutes he pulled back and he started looking at all my facial features.

A few moments later he laughed and said, “you have my nose.”

I then laughed and said, “well I’m glad that I got your nose instead of getting my mums.” Leah then came up and pulled me into her arms and she said, “welcome home Luna.” I then laughed and I said, “thanks Leah.” Steve then said, “Luna you don’t have to call me dad yet or at all until you’re comfortable.” I then said, “it might take me a while until I am ready to call you dad but when I am I will tell you and is it ok if I go for a run?” Steve then said, “sure but make sure you have your phone on you so I can call you when Bella gets here.” I then said, “ok well I will be back soon.” I then started running I didn’t know where I was going but all I knew was that I needed to run.

Half an hour later I found myself at my cubbyhouse and as I was about to climb up to it I stopped because I couldn’t not without the one person who has made me feel happy again. So, I got my phone out and started ringing him and almost instantly he answered saying, “hey Dimples I was about to come and knock at your door.” I then said, “I need you.” Leo then said, “where are you?” I then said, “I’m at our spot.” Leo then said, “stay there I will get Nova’s car and will be there soon.” Twenty minutes later Leo pulled up in his sister’s car and he quickly turned it off and locked it and ran up and pulled me into a hug. I then said, “I found out who my dad is.” Leo then said, “do you want to talk about it?” I then said, “Steve is my biological dad.” Leo then said, “wait you mean Steve as in our English teacher Steve.”

I then said, “well that’s the only Steve that I know.” Leo then said, “shall we go and sit in the treehouse?” I then said, “sure.” For the next five minutes we just sat there in silence until suddenly Leo broke the silence and said, “well do you know what you want to do?” I then took a deep breath and said, “I think I want to find out where my mums dad lives and get him to answer my questions.”

Leo then said, “well how about we go back to your house and do some research to find out where he lives.” I then said, “I think that’s a good idea also thank you for coming Speckles I really appreciate it.” Leo then said, “you don’t have to thank me I am always going to be there for you.” We then both got into Nova’s car and drove off.

Half an hour later we opened my front door to find Steve and Leah hugging each other. Leah then saw me and said, “Luna your back and it’s good to see you, Leo.” Leo then said, “it good to see you as well.” Steve then said, “hi Leo.” Leo then said, “I just wanted to say that Luna told me that you’re her dad and I’m glad that it can be someone that she can trust." Steve then said, “thank you Leo so what are you two up to?” I then said, “well Leo and I are going to do some research about my grandfather and so, I can get him to answer some my questions.” Steve then took a deep breath and said, “you don’t need to do that because I know where he lives.” I then said, “wait how do you know that?” Steve then said, “because I used to live next door with my dad and his wife Karen.” Leo then said, “oh no not a Karen.”

I then laughed and said, “Leo!” Steve then started laughing and he said, “my dads’ wife is a Karen through and through.” I then said, “so she’s someone that we don’t want to meet am I correct?” Leah then said, “exactly trust me I don’t like being unkind to people but she is the she-devil in disguise.” Leo then said, “is she that bad.” Steve then said, “she invited herself to our wedding and she wore a wedding dress.” I then said, “well let’s hope I never get to meet her.” Steve then said, “since my dad died, she has been living in the house with her new boyfriend Joel.” I then said, “oh no not a Joel.” Leo then said, “why not a Joel?” I then said, “my toxic ex boyfriends named Joel.” Leo then clenched his hand and said, “how toxic?” As I was about to say what he used to do I could see that Steve started to clench his fist.

I then said, “he was never violent its more that he tried to undermine me at everything until I had enough and told him where to stuff his relationship at.” Both Steve and Leo then unclenched their fists and Steve said, “well I’m glad that he doesn’t bother you anymore.” I then said, “well ever since Leo started at the school he hasn’t.” Leo then said, “well I’m glad he hasn’t tried to come up to you while I’ve been around because I wouldn’t tolerate him.” Suddenly there was a knock on the door so, Leah went and opened it, and it was Bella. Leah then said, “hi Bella come in.” so, Bella came in and said, “thank you and hello Steve, Leah, Luna and sorry I don’t believe we have met before hi I’m Bella and I’m Lunas caseworker.”

Leo then said, “hi I’m Leo and I’m Lunas best friend and neighbour.” Bella then said, “well its very nice to meet you.” Leo then said, “yeah it’s nice to meet you to and Dimples I will come back later.” I then said, “ok well I will see you later Speckles.” Once Leo left, we all walked into the dining room and sat down. Bella then said, “so, Luna Steve has told me that you have got your DNA test back and I was wondering if you have already opened it?” I then said, “yes I did and yes I did open it and read it.” Bella then said, “did it have any information on who your biological dad is?” I then said, “here you can read it yourself.” Five minutes later she finally finished reading the letter and she said, “so Steve did you know that Luna was your biological daughter?”

Steve then said, “of course I didn’t if I did, she wouldn’t be in the Children protective services.” I then said, “I can show you prove that he didn’t know about me.” Bella then said, “well go and get this prove.” So, I quickly ran upstairs to my bedroom and grabbed out the video camera and ran back down with it. I then got up the video of my mum saying that Steve didn’t know that I was his child. Bella then said, “well then Steve since you are Lunas’s father we won’t be coming around as much but we will still be coming around until her eighteenth birthday.”Steve then said, “that’s alright since her birthday is coming up soon.” I then said, “I was wondering if I could change my birth certificate then and my last name as well?”

Bella then said, “if that’s what you want that should be fine.” Steve then said, “wait I can understand why you would want to update your birth certificate, but you want to change your last name?” I then said, “well when I started school all the other kids would ask me questions on who my dad was and when I told them I didn’t have a dad they asked me whose last name I had then? That’s when they used to bully me about not having a dad and I have always wanted to have a dad and to have his last name.” Steve then said, “well if you want to have my last name as well then you can.” I then got up and gave him a hug and that was when Bella said, “well it will all take up to six weeks.”

I then said, “that is fine as long as I can still do it.” Bella then said, “well then is there anything else you want to ask or need before I go?” I then said, “not that I can think of?” Steve then said, “there’s one thing we are planning on going on a holiday so Luna can meet some of her family.” Bella then said, “I think that is a great idea and I will be seeing you guys a week before Luna’s birthday.” Once she left, I said, “why does she still have to be involved?” Leah then said, “I think that’s just policy because I know a few of my patients have told me that they have gotten custody of their children, but children protective services were still being involved.” Steve then said, “it doesn’t matter because you will be eighteen soon enough and you will never have to see her again.”

Leah then said, “well when are we planning on going on this holiday?” Steve then said, “well there is still a couple of weeks of school left so we can go during the holidays if you can get some time off Leah.” Leah then said, “yeah I should be able to.”
