Left Without Him

Freya's POV This isn't marriage! This isn't marriage. The words were a continuous echo in my mind as the night stretched on. As usual, his side of the bed was empty, and I knew exactly where he was — spending the night at the guest room, and with her. I tossed and turned but couldn't shake the words off my mind. Did he mean the marriage was over? Is he planning on rejecting me? I shoved the thoughts of rejection off my mind, an archaic tradition that had become too common amongst werewolves tired of their mate. Kara, my wolf, had remained silent, but I could hear her subtle sobs. She was more displeased that her mate had said ‘this isn't marriage.’ ‘Go look for him,’ Kara's voice echoed in my head, her voice a mixture of pain and sorrow. Kara had been with me since I turned eighteen and had been my companion and confidante. She had given the go-ahead for me to marry him since his wolf was her mate. But right now, I could only feel that maybe, just maybe, she had picked a wrong choice. ‘No, Kara,’ I muttered, shutting her up and reminding her of the fact that her mate didn't want her, and this only increased her somber state. The next morning, I awoke at the sound of a knock, and Mirian walked in, her face filled with much worry as she took a seat beside me. “You know I don't do well with this look, so say it. It can't be any worse!” Our eyes locked, and for the first time, I saw how worried she truly was. Mirian was one of the few maids who understood my situation, but what had gotten her this worried? “Actually, it is,” she said with much hesitation. “You know I don't do well with suspense, so spit it out.” She contemplated, “It's about Natalie.” My heart made a gentle thud, and enough to get me worried. “What is it about her?” I asked with much curiosity. Again, Mirian hesitated, and my patience grew thinner by the second. “I heard her discussing with the Alpha, and it seems—” I shrieked out a cry when I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. “Something wrong?” Marian's voice was barely audible enough for me to hear, doused by the immense pain coursing through my body. Seconds later, I hit the tiled floor, my arms still clenched to my stomach in an attempt to control the unimaginable pain. The next moment, my head drummed with Kara's cry, and only then did I realize what had gone wrong. But I was too weak to think before I passed out. **** I squinted until my eyes adjusted to the glaring fluorescent lights. Everywhere was white. However, the smell of alcohol and disinfectant made me realize where I was. Hospital. A man dressed in white registered and, adjusting his glasses, he read from his notes. "No abnormalities; no toxins from food poisoning, and a normal body temperature," He lowered his glasses and moved closer, "The test shows you're perfectly fine, but you were unconscious when he brought you here…what the hell happened, Mrs. Blackwood?" ‘He?’ Who the hell was ‘he?’ I pondered as the doctor's words echoed. Of course, I knew what had happened. My husband had not only cheated on me but had gotten the b***h pregnant. In the werewolf world, if a husband gets another woman pregnant, the wife bears the pain, and that was what had happened to me. Totally unfair, but who was I to question the laws? Kara had gone silent, and after her loud cry, I could no longer feel her presence. And with a deep, frustrated sigh, I said, "I must have snapped." The doctor gave me a weird look, and I wondered if he saw through the lie. But I hoped he understood why I was not about to tell a stranger that my husband had gotten another woman pregnant. "Who is ‘he’?" I asked when the thought of the pronoun crossed my mind. "You mean the man who brought you here?” “Yes.” The door swung open, and the doctor held back his thoughts. He lowered his head when another man walked into the room. Still lying on the hospital bed, I ran a quick scan through his features. Six feet plus, broad shoulders, dark hair, and the blue eyes that seemed to suck me in the moment our eyes met. Quite handsome. In fact, too handsome with his chiseled jawline. He strolled in with both arms tucked in his pockets. "How is she?" he said in the direction of the doctor. "Just a little rest, and she would be fine," the doctor replied. My gaze continued to linger on his features, and I could swear that he was even more handsome as he moved closer. "Leave us!" he ordered. The doctor picked up his notes and found his way out, and I was left with a total stranger. Quite dangerous, but I relaxed, knowing fully well that I was in a hospital, and that somebody would come to my rescue if something were to go wrong. "Who are you?" I asked. "The man who brought you here," he replied promptly. "I found a woman struggling with your weight on a street not far from here." He contemplated, "Mirian, is her name… you know her?" "Yes, she is my handmaiden… did something happen to her?" "No, she couldn't make it here because she was summoned back to her pack, at which point she had to abandon you. If I recall, she made mention that her Alpha had given strict orders for her to return," he said, his tone emotionless. "Now tell me, why would an Alpha do that to his Luna?" He just called me Luna. How the hell did he know? A chill ran down my spine at the knowing that Mirian had left me for dead on husband's orders. However, it wasn't much of a surprise. "You know I'm a Luna?" I questioned. "I know so many things about you, Freya, but that doesn't answer my question." His grin immediately gave way to a grim. I tried to look for the perfect excuse, but none came forth. I maintained eye contact, but what puzzled me most was that I could feel the masculine aura. However, something different about it challenged my perspicacity. "I have nothing to say in that regard," I grumbled, frustrated that I was having such a discussion with a complete stranger. He contemplated for the next few seconds, his brows knitted. I could tell that he saw through me, including how frustrated I was, and for some unknown reasons, he gave me a pitiful look, and I struggled to understand what it meant. “Something wrong?” I asked. “Of course, everything is wrong, especially when a Luna is being treated like s**t. But you just take the necessary rest, and when you are well rested, we can discuss.”
