The Alpha's True Face

1387 Words
Freya POV I startled the moment the door banged open. Damon marched in, looking all furious. “Leave us!” The maid dashed out the door, and from the reflection of the mirror, I saw a scowl on his face. “What the f**k did you say to Dimitri?” he barked. “What do you mean?” “Don't f*****g play games with me, Freya. Now is not the time because I'm damn serious.” “I don't know what you're talking about,” I reiterated, and his brows knitted even further. “Dimitri reneged on the deal we've agreed on, and I feel it has something to do with you,” he said beneath gritted teeth. “Me?” My palms fell to my chest, astonished at his speedy conclusions. Perhaps if he had used the same speed and energy to do his background check and investigation, he would have figured out the true reason. But I was the easy way out, the person to blame for whatever misfortune befell him or his pack. “I've worked hard to secure this deal, but only to be met with disappointment. Now tell me, what have you done this time?” He growled. “I swear, I didn't do anything,” I pleaded. I was sure to have said nothing unusual during my brief conversation with Dimitri, and I knew this was likely to go bad. However, the question begging to be answered in my mind was, what deal had Dimitri reneged on? Damon raked his hair in frustration, and before I could ponder further, I felt his firm grip. “You b***h!” he cursed. I winced in pain as his fingers squeezed and tightened around my cheeks. But he had other plans in mind the moment he yanked my hair, and I screamed to contain the unimaginable pain. The pain only subsided when I got tossed into the courtyard, and gravels dug into my knees. However, what bothered me was the little crowd that had gathered, as if waiting for something to happen. “Please, Damon, I swear—” “Enough!” he cut me off, making me flinch. A faint giggle registered from Natalie, who was in the crowd of other pack members. “You've brought so much pain and suffering to this pack,” my husband began, while I steadied myself on my knees, “and you've brought much shame to the Blackwoods.” ‘Don't let him do it,’ Kara's faint voice echoed in my head, but I couldn't understand what she meant until… “Let it be known that henceforth,” he continued, “you cease to be my wife and mate. I reject you as my mate and Luna, and you cease to be a member of this pack, effective immediately.” The crowd cheered at his pronouncements. A few had smug faces but I was too bothered to care. Kara made a loud cry as the mate bond severed, sending pain all through my body. And as if that was not enough, I fell face-down, splitting my lower lip after getting kicked from behind. *** I had come to terms with the fact that my mate had rejected me, and I was about to leave the pack. I still had an aunt who would take me in, since my parents had passed away. But something that had to be done before taking me leave. I found my way to Damon's office, where I met him with his leg crossed on the table and seated with Lucas, the pack’s beta. They suspended all ongoing conversation when I registered my presence “I would need my company back,” I said with great resolve. Damon raised his brows, and I figured he didn't see that coming. Well, since I was going to leave, then I figured I would take back my inheritance, which was in his possession. “Leave us!” The beta exited the office, and Damon turned to me and, with much disdain, he said, “And why would I do that?” “Because it's mine. I only agreed you take possession because of our marriage…but since we are no longer man and wife, then I would have it back.” After much contemplation, he said, “I will arrange for the paperwork. You can spend the night here, and by tomorrow, you can leave with the documents once the lawyer is done.” I nodded and found my exit. Soon, I returned back to my room, and I was ready to leave this godforsaken pack. Again, Kara was silent, and I could longer feel her presence. The pain of rejection is just as painful as first time transformation, and I understood why Kara had gone quite. ‘Kara!’ I called a few times as I lay still on the bed, my things packed into a set of two bags in anticipation of dawn. No word from Kara, and I began to drift off. And I had no inkling of the danger that lay ahead, or the fact that I had been marked for death until a large palm fell on my mouth. I tried to scream, but it was futile, and soon I passed out when the smell of chloroform filled my lungs. Later, I awoke at an unknown location, but the trees and the darkness signaled it was somewhere outside the pack. I tried to move, but no. My arms were fastened behind my back, and legs bound together with firm ropes. “You think I'm going to hand over the company,” came a voice. From a distance, a figure uncovered its face, and Damon registered in the lingering darkness. But what scared me most was the shiny piece of steel on his left arm. He sauntered while I lay on the bare ground. “You don't have to do this, Damon. It doesn't have to end like this,” I cried. He choked out a laugh, “Of course, it does, just like your parents, and it's time for you to join them in the afterlife,” he mocked. My heart stopped at the realization that Damon had orchestrated my parents' death. The doctors had found poison in the autopsy report. But why? “Why, Damon?” I asked. He laughed again, and the tears flowed down my cheeks as I lay still, unable to move. “You were like a son to them, so I deserve to know why,” He lowered himself so he could see my face, and with a smirk, he said, “A son, you say?” “Yes, they loved you. So why?” “Your parents deserved what they got. They proved stubborn by not signing the Waterfront Contract, so I had to take necessary action.” Yes, I remembered the Waterfront project. It was one of the biggest projects ever embarked upon and single-handedly financed by my father through his company. I also remembered that Damon and his father were among the top several contractors that had bid for the project. However, my father decided to hire a little-known contractor, citing irregularities and falsification of records on Damon's credentials. And the several packs that made up the werewolf world have my father to thank for the clean water now being enjoyed. But now, it grieved me to know that such fine gestures had only been rewarded with evil, and by my very husband, now ex. The tears stopped flowing; if I was going to die, so be it. “Come on, Damon, let's not waste much time,” Natalie's shrill voice sounded in the background. She moved and pulled open the car trunk. The sight of two wild dogs held in chains made me shiver. “How about we play a little game? I'm going to set you free, and you'll live if you can outrun my dogs. Mind you, they've not eaten for days, specially made for this purpose.” Minutes later, I found myself running through the woods. Abandoned by Kara, I burned all my strength while trying to save myself from the wild dogs not too far behind. But I soon tripped, fracturing my ankle. And at that moment, I knew there was no way out. I was going to die anyway.
