CHAPTER FOUR Once in the village, Asphodel and Vass found an inn, where they booked a room. Vass said, “If there’s work in this place, we can look for somewhere to live. If not, we’ll need to move on.” Asphodel left Vass talking to some of the villagers in the inn bar about work. It appeared that because it was close to the border with Rindissillaran, most of the villagers could speak at least some Elvish. She wandered along a cobbled street, gazing around her. She had never been in a human village before, and it piqued her interest. There were a few trees around a green space in the centre. Not enough trees. How can people live without trees? The houses, too, fascinated her. They were all on the ground. No one had built in the trees. The ground was hard cobbles with no grass growing
