When we arrive at the school I remind Selene "Don't forget you have a test in math and science today."
"K." She responds unbuckling as the car comes to a stop. Her group of friends, the "popular" kids, all hanging around the front entrance, like normal. I just wish that all her friends liked her for her and weren't just hanging around because of her unmistakable beauty, even among the beauty of most werewolves she stood out. In the words of others: it was like she was built in a lab by teenage boys.
"Wait, Aloy." Alexander says turning to face me as I go to get out myself after handing Selene her bag after she got out. I give him a questioning look as I take my eyes away from Selene walking over to her friends.
"I wanted to say good luck finding your mate tomorrow since I won't see you. I hope he's everything you deserve." He says his eyes boring into mine so I roll them saying "You should know me better than that. Finding a mate isn't something I'm interested in. Besides I'm sure to be rejected anyway."
"I know you're not but whoever it is he better make you his personal Luna or he'll have to deal with me, Sam, and Selene." He responds his body already overflowing with anger and power vibes.
"I know and I thank you for that but I'll be find. I'm already ready for it." I tell him in the calming voice I've developed as I place a hand on his shoulder causing the vibes to dissipate quickly as he turns his eyes downward and mumbles something that I couldn't decipher. But I let it go as I give his shoulder a soft squeeze with an "It's going to be fine."
"Sure." He says his voice still unconvinced before getting his crooked smile as he tells me "Now get out of my car before you're late for your last day of school."
"K." I respond dragging it out while I get out of the car, shutting the door behind me. I send a look in Selene's direction to which she returns, as if she could sense it. Like normal, she gives me a smile and waves me off, my job as lady-in-waiting not required in school. And like normal, I give her a nod and head in, if she needed my job as her friend she knew where to find me and contact me.
Walking into my last first period, English, I sit in my assigned seat in the back of the room by the window, drowning out the conversations of the others in the room as I pull out my book and start reading. My existence was even more invisible in school, surrounded by humans and other werewolves alike, than just in the pack territory. Even teachers forgot about my existence sometimes, not that I blamed them really, as even most of the other humans were better looking than I was and I didn't mind being practically invisible. Thus I didn't do anything to not be invisible. It was kind of my job after all.
****Time Skip***
The rest of the day goes by quickly, with no classes actually doing work and just having videos playing or letting us do whatever so I could easily finish my book in a timely fashion. Oh, how I hated myself for enjoying romance novels while not being deluded enough to think a love story could ever happen to me even with a supposed mate chosen just for me by the moon goddess. I could just see it now, my future, the rejected and un-mated lead omega of the Silver Moon pack that lives vicariously through the characters of romance novels when the future Alpha Alexander and his Luna's pups are asleep.
But for now, I stood, changed into my simple grey t-shirt and black basketball shorts, in front of Selene, changed into her black sports bra and grey shorts, both of us with wooden staffs in our hands and the afternoon sun beating down on us.
"Again!" shouted my father, Bast Sobeck, the one responsible for training the warriors, as the lead warrior, which included Selene, thus me. Like most male wolves he oozed strength from the top of his bald tanned head and down his large 6' build to his booted feet and resonated out of his earth colored eyes. Again all of us attacked our opponent some getting the staff from their opponent's hands and the other's just getting it blocked, like Selene and I.
Though I knew my father loved me I could still catch the slight disappointment in his eyes, which he always quickly hid, whenever i "failed" or was just "okay". I was never going to be the child he had wanted. Maybe if I was more like Peter, the only other omega being trained as a warrior being the son of an omega mother and gamma father, and at least held some gamma traits it wouldn't be as bad. But all of my parents' gamma genetics skipped me and mad me an omega among omegas.
And being an omega sucks, everything about us being only slightly better than a human if at all for the unlucky few, like me, and for the lucky few, like Peter, they had a few outlier traits on par with gamma or sometimes better. Though there was one good thing about being an omega when it came to being a warrior, for those few chosen, or if the pack should ever fall under attack, our scent. It was a challenge to pick up an omega's scent as it was weak because...well we generally were. Thus if we were a warrior we would generally have the duty of scout and if the pack should ever fall under attack we would have the duty of assisting the young and elders in escaping.
So in terms of scent I guess I did have one thing going for me. Mine was an "omega among omegas" it being almost non-existent. This was helpful in survival exercises but wasn't helpful in the whole finding a mate situation. Our mates scent being what draws us close to each other, thus generally enabling us to find each other. Though most omegas' mates would be omega themselves and actually not that hard to find compared to the higher rung mates. There were few omegas and few packs that accepted omegas so if an omega's mate wasn't in their pack they generally only had a few packs to visit when it came time to "having" to find one. Though because I was a female thus wouldn't run into the problem of my werewolf turning feral if I never found my mate or never had a reproductive relationship with someone. So I guess that's another thing I had going for me...
"You lot aren't even trying! It's time for a game of run, fight, or die!" My father shouts earning various reactions of delight and despair as we drop our staffs before he announces "You know the drill! After I announce the pairs, pick who is going to be the runner and they'll get a three second head start! If you make it to the edge of the territory and back without getting caught you win! If you get caught you go down fighting and if you're dragged back you lose! Phillip and Peter, Greg and Hope, Steve and Selene, Lloyd and Maria, Nina and Bella, John and Cain, and Aloy and Reece."
"You can be the runner Aloy." Reece, the biggest and most athletic guy of the group minus Steve, tells me as he grins at me as I go to stand next to him. Of course my father would pair me with him again for run, fight, or die instead of with Selene or someone else. Despite his size and ability, Reece was nice to me, he would only use the speed of a jog and when he found me would simply throw me over his shoulder and take me back while telling me "better luck next time." Though I really think this is just because he's nice and probably sees me as "a little kid playing with the big kids." Then Selene...well, she knew exactly how to find me, was easily twice as fast as me, and would complain about it being easy while simply following me to the edge and back. And then someone else...yeah, they probably wouldn't hold back against me and beat me half to death before bringing me back.
I nod and get into position with the other runners as we all stand in a line and get a whispered "Good luck." from Selene from her spot next to me. So I give another nod, this time at her before my dad throws his arms into the air.
Then with an intake of air he shouts "Go!" and we're off. And though I'm going as fast as I can, it's pathetic. Everyone already too far away for me to see, hear, or smell. Soon I'm out of juice and I slow to a walk. I try to calm my breathing and keep my steps quiet while also trying to listen for footsteps approaching. Maybe I'd make it if I stayed quiet and out of sight...yeah I was really just kidding myself. It wouldn't be long until Reese found me and took me back, like normal.
