I don’t trust him. I keep telling myself that. But the documents don’t lie. Transfers. Offshore accounts. Unauthorized access routes. Adrian’s father’s name appears too many times. “You’re showing me selective evidence,” I say sharply. Viktor tilts his head. “Am I?” My hands curl into fists. “Where is Adrian?” I ask. “Trying to find you,” Viktor replies calmly. A pause. “But he won’t.” My heart stutters. “Why?” Viktor walks to the window. “Because he’s following the wrong trail.” He turns back to me. “You think I took you to hurt him.” “Didn’t you?” “No,” he says simply. “I brought you here so you could choose.” My throat tightens. “Choose what?” Viktor smiles faintly. “Who you belong to.” Anger flashes through me. “I don’t belong to anyone.” For the first time, his expression hardens. “That’s what he told you,” Viktor says. “He lies because he has to.” My phone suddenly vibrates in my pocket. Unknown signal. I answer before I think. “Elena, don’t trust him.” Adrian’s voice. But distorted. Weak. “Adrian?” I whisper. A crash. Static. Then silence. The line dies. Viktor watches me. And smiles.
