“Owooooooooo,” a distressing howl brought me to my feet. It was strange, just moments ago, I felt a gut-wrenching pain in my chest. I felt lightheaded for a moment, sending me to settle down on the ground until it passed. But that was the least of my worries. The moment I heard the howl, my heart stopped. Each wolf had its own voice, and I recognized this one.
“Stein!” I called out. I had always been the one to remain calm under pressure. This time, there was nothing about this situation that led me to find that inner calm.
