“I am alone too.” Lioba has regained her composure. “My parents and my brother are gone. So, I understand how hard this is for you.” She glances at Gustav as if asking for his approval. He nods and smiles at her. Lioba returns the smile and then focuses on the man. “Why don’t you come with us?” “No, I am going to stay here,” the man says. “This is my home. I won’t have any other.” “Please, let us take the boat. If you keep it, the Russians will be sure to take it,” Gustav says. “That’s my son’s boat. It’s all I have left of him.” Peter can see Gustav’s anxiety increasing with every boom in the distance. He would probably force this man to give up the boat. But it should not happen like that.
