Portia had left town a year ago. She told Markus's mother goodbye when she heard Markus was not coming home. And that he had extended his stay in the military to train an extra year to join Special Ops.  Once he got home from the military, Markus called everyone he knew that knew Portia, and finally, he got a breakthrough of where she might be. He quickly packed up his suitcase and got on a train. Markus felt that the month he spent searching Portia's whereabouts was worth it.
