– Shadows That Lurk
Morning came with pale sunlight. Rei’s apartment was still a mess—the broken glass uncollected, the shattered table left as it was.
Hana sat by the small table near the window, staring blankly outside. Last night still played vividly in her mind—the masked men, the sound of shattering glass, the deadly look in Rei’s eyes.
But stronger than that memory was how he had looked at her afterward. As if… he feared losing her more than anything.
Rei sat opposite her, fiddling with an old black phone he hadn’t touched in years. His fingers moved quickly, his aura cold once more.
“Rei-san…” Hana finally spoke.
“Who were those people? How did they find your place?”
Rei stopped briefly, meeting her gaze. A heavy pause hung before he answered, voice flat but burdened.
“They’re not ordinary criminals. They’re from my past. People who were never supposed to hunt me again.”
“Your past… what do you mean?” Hana pressed gently.
Rei didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stood, walked to the kitchen, and poured tea into two cups. When he set one in front of her, he said softly, “The less you know, the safer you’ll be. But it seems they won’t stop. Which means…”
“Which means I’m in danger too,” Hana finished for him, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rei looked at her—not with coldness, but guilt. “Yes.”
---
Hana clutched the warm cup tightly. She could have left, gone back to her normal life. But strangely, she didn’t want to.
“I won’t run,” she declared suddenly. “I know I’m just a burden, but I don’t want to leave you alone.”
Rei fell silent. Her words were simple, but they sank deep.
He lowered his gaze, hiding his expression. If Hana stayed, the risks would grow. Yet… his heart felt relief at her choice.
---
Later that day, Rei stepped out briefly. He met an old contact—an informant—inside a quiet bar.
“There’s movement,” the informant whispered, sliding him a file filled with photos and notes. “The old organization… they’re active again. And you’re their first target.”
Rei flipped through the file. Blurry photos, scribbled reports of transactions, and names he recognized. One name made his eyes harden.
“…So he’s still alive.”
“Yes. And he’s not alone.”
---
That night, Rei returned. Hana had fallen asleep on the sofa, curled up like a child, hugging a pillow tight. The dim light made her face look peaceful.
Rei stood silently, watching her for a long time. An unfamiliar mix of warmth, fear, and the fierce urge to protect stirred within him.
Slowly, he pulled a blanket over her.
“Hana…” he whispered faintly. “Do I even deserve to trap you in this world?”
He already knew the answer. No. But even so, he could no longer let her go.
Outside the window, a faint shadow crouched on the rooftop across the street, eyes cold as they observed the apartment.
The battle hadn’t begun yet—
but the grip of the shadows was tightening.
– Cracks in the Heart
Rain fell that night. Its droplets tapped against the apartment window, as if echoing the gloom in the air.
Hana sat at the dining table, watching Rei as he carefully cleaned up shards of glass with gloves on. Ever since the meeting with the informant that afternoon, Rei’s demeanor had grown colder. He spoke only when necessary, and even his usual faint smile had vanished.
“Today… you’re acting strange,” Hana whispered.
Rei didn’t answer right away. He picked up the last shard, then stood. “I’m just thinking. It’s nothing.”
Hana bit her lower lip. She could feel a distance growing between them. A distance that pierced her heart. “Rei-san… am I just a burden to you?”
Rei froze, his shoulders stiffening. Such a simple question, yet it felt harder than facing dozens of enemies.
“You should live a normal life, Hana. School, work, friends… not trapped with a man like me.”
Hana stood, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “But I already chose! Why do you always speak as if I don’t have the right to decide for myself?”
Silence filled the room. Only the sound of rain lingered.
Rei looked at her, and in his eyes there was something fragile—not fear of enemies, but fear of losing Hana.
“I’m not afraid of your enemies,” Hana whispered. “The only thing I fear… is you pushing me away.”
Rei closed his eyes briefly, then exhaled heavily. He knew Hana was too precious, too innocent for this dark world. Yet at the same time, she was the very reason his heart endured.
Slowly, he stepped closer and reached for Hana’s cold hands. “I can’t promise safety. But… I also can’t let you go.”
Hana’s tears fell, but this time they came with a small smile. She nodded softly. “That’s enough for me.”
That night, though shadows of enemies still lurked outside, the two of them sat close together—trying to mend the cracks in each other’s hearts.
– Steps in the Shadows
The night was still damp with rain as Rei stepped outside. The streets were empty, lit only by flickering lamps. His black jacket was damp at the shoulders, but he didn’t care. There was something he had to uncover tonight.
A small note from yesterday’s informant led him to an old warehouse on the city’s edge. The decrepit building looked abandoned, but his instincts told him otherwise. Rei moved quietly, silent as the shadow he once was.
Inside, he spotted several men in black speaking in hushed voices. From a c***k in the rotting wood, he caught fragments of their conversation.
“…the target isn’t just Rei. The girl too. We’ll use her to make him surrender.”
Rei clenched his fists. The cold in his chest burned into a smoldering fire. Hana. They truly intended to use Hana as bait.
Without hesitation, he stepped forward.
“In that case… you’ll never even get close to her.”
The room froze. Three men turned, immediately drawing weapons. A brief fight erupted—swift and brutal. Rei’s movements were sharp, efficient, taking them down one by one. No cries, only the thuds of bodies hitting the floor.
When the last man collapsed unconscious, Rei grabbed the documents on the table. There were photos of him… and Hana. A red circle marked Hana’s face.
“…Bastards,” he hissed.
---
Hours later, Rei returned to the apartment. Hana was awake, waiting on the sofa with a worried face. The moment the door opened, she rushed to her feet.
“Where did you go? I… I was so worried!”
Rei set down his jacket, his expression cold though his voice remained soft. “There was something I had to deal with.”
Hana’s gaze dropped to the fresh wound on his arm. “You fought again, didn’t you?”
Rei said nothing, only looked back at her. Hana stepped closer, her hands trembling as she touched his arm. “When will you stop hiding everything from me?”
Silence. Then Rei finally spoke, voice low. “They’re targeting you, Hana.”
Her eyes widened. “Me?”
“Yes. You’ll become my weakness if they manage to take you. And that… is the one thing I can never allow.”
Tears welled in Hana’s eyes. But they weren’t from fear—they were from realizing just how much she meant to him.
She gripped his hand tighter. “Then don’t let go of me. We’ll face it together, Rei-san.”
Rei studied her face, then gave a small nod. Heavy though it was, he knew Ha
na had already become part of this fight.
Outside, the night was silent again. But within that silence, steps moved in the shadows—drawing closer.
