– Hiding at Dusk
Night had long fallen when Rei and Hana arrived at an abandoned house on the edge of the city—a temporary hideout. A dim light from a single hanging lamp cast shadows over the dusty room, yet for the first time, Hana felt she could breathe in peace.
Hana sat on the floor, her gaze fixed on the wound on Rei’s arm. With careful hands, she cleaned the dried blood, wiping the injury with a warm cloth.
“You’re always protecting me… even if it means getting hurt yourself,” she murmured softly.
Rei lowered his head, looking down at Hana. His thin smile softened the cold aura around him.
“I don’t care about the wound… what matters is that you’re safe.”
Hana looked up, her voice awkward but sincere.
“I… I’m not afraid anymore, as long as you’re with me.”
Rei let out a long breath and stepped closer. His eyes locked onto hers, filled with unspoken emotion.
“Hana… I have to be honest with you. All this time, I’ve been afraid of losing you. Not just because of the dangers outside, but because I…” His voice faltered, trembling with emotion.
Hana held her breath, waiting.
“Because you… what, Rei-san?”
“I… have fallen in love with you,” Rei whispered, quiet yet certain. “And I can’t keep pretending my feelings don’t exist.”
For a moment, Hana was stunned into silence. Then, slowly, her lips curved into a gentle smile.
“I… feel the same, Rei-san. I’ve always wanted to stay by your side, no matter what happens.”
Rei lowered his hand, touching her cheek softly, as if to confirm the moment was real.
“Then… we’ll face everything together. I’ll never let you go.”
Tears welled in Hana’s eyes as she embraced him tightly. The world outside—sirens, enemies, shadows—felt distant and meaningless. In that room, there were only two hearts holding onto each other.
That night, they sat close, hands entwined. For the first time, Rei felt peace beside Hana—despite the danger still lurking beyond the walls.
– Approaching Shadows
Dawn broke, sunlight slipping through the cracks of the old window. Rei sat on the floor, eyes fixed on a roughly drawn city map. In his hand, a pencil marked possible enemy routes.
Hana stirred awake under a thin blanket. Her hair was messy, her face bare and innocent. She watched Rei, already working since before sunrise, then approached quietly.
“How long have you been up?” she asked softly.
“Before the sun,” Rei replied without looking at her. “We don’t have much time. They’re already spreading out to find us.”
Hana crouched beside him, following the lines on the map.
“Have you always lived like this? In the shadows, always running?”
Rei was silent for a moment before answering flatly.
“Yes. And I’m used to it.”
Hana shook her head gently.
“I don’t want you to get used to being alone anymore.”
Finally, Rei turned to her. His sharp eyes softened, just slightly. He set the pencil down with a sigh.
“Then you have to learn. This world isn’t kind. You must know how to protect yourself if I’m not there.”
Though fear flickered in her face, Hana nodded.
“Teach me.”
Rei led her to the backyard. With steady patience, he showed her the basics: how to detect approaching footsteps, how to stand defensively, even how to grip a blade for survival.
Hana stumbled often, her hands trembling, her stance shaky. But each time she faltered, Rei steadied her hands, correcting her gently.
“Calm yourself,” he whispered. “Don’t let fear control you.”
Looking into his eyes—so close, so steady—Hana found the courage to try again.
After hours of practice, she was drenched in sweat, her breathing ragged, but her eyes shone with determination.
“I did it, didn’t I?” she asked with a shy smile.
Rei studied her for a long moment, then gave a faint smile.
“Yes. You’re stronger than you think.”
The moment broke when the faint rumble of engines echoed from afar. Rei stiffened instantly, his instincts sharp. He doused the small fire in the corner and pulled Hana back inside.
“They’re moving faster than I expected,” he said firmly. “We’ll have to leave tonight.”
Hana gripped his hand tightly.
“Then… I’ll go with you. No matter what, I’ll stay by your side.”
Rei met her gaze, shaken by her resolve. For the first time, he felt he wasn’t fighting alone.
Outside, the sound of vehicles grew closer. The threat was coming. But within the shadows, two hearts beat as one, ready to face the world together.
– Wounds Amidst Fire
Twilight deepened. The streets around the old house were quiet, but danger pressed closer with each passing minute. Rei knew they couldn’t wait any longer.
“Get ready, Hana. We’re moving tonight.”
Before they could act, the crash of shattering glass tore through the silence. A smoke grenade rolled across the floor, filling the room with choking haze.
“Hana! Down!” Rei shoved her to the ground, dragging her swiftly out of the room as heavy footsteps closed in.
They sprinted down the back corridor—only to find three armed men blocking their escape.
“Damn…” Rei muttered under his breath.
The fight erupted instantly. Rei moved with lethal precision, his knife flashing as he struck down one opponent. But the numbers were against him. A bullet tore through his shoulder, blood soaking his shirt.
“Rei!” Hana screamed, trying to steady his staggering form.
Though wounded, Rei’s eyes burned with unyielding resolve.
“Don’t let go of me. We have to get out.”
Through the smoke and chaos, Rei shielded Hana, deflecting blows, pushing forward. His body weakened, but whenever he faltered, Hana supported him, refusing to give up.
At last, they stumbled into an old underground tunnel. Rei collapsed to his knees, blood dripping down his arm.
Hana’s tears blurred her vision as she cradled his face.
“Don’t say that, Rei. You’re not alone anymore. I’m here. I’ll protect you, just like you’ve always protected me.”
Through the haze of pain, Rei’s gaze steadied on her. A faint smile touched his lips.
“Hana… you’re the reason I’m still alive.”
He slipped into unconsciousness, and Hana held him tightly
, tears falling. In the darkness of the tunnel, she swore to herself: she would never let Rei fall alone again.
