The glass tower of Solaria Bay Resort's administrative wing rose like a glittering wall against the turquoise horizon of Mactan.
By eight thirty that morning, the ocean air was already thick with tropical humidity, but inside the executive floor, the air conditioning was cranked down to a sharp, bone-chilling cold.
Jen stood in front of the vanity mirror in the executive washroom, pressing a cold, wet paper towel against her face.
She hadn't slept more than two hours. Every time she had closed her eyes the night before, she saw Thomas kneeling on her living room floor, showing Gioia the wooden art supplies, or felt the phantom burn of his thumb tracing her cheek bone. His parting words echoed through her mind with terrifying clarity: "Consider me your new executive chairperson, Miss Delos Santos. I'll see you at nine o'clock."
Jen smoothed down the skirt of her tailored charcoal suit, a sharp, professional armor she had deliberately chosen to replace her softer resort dress and straightened her collar. She took a deep, steadying breath, looking at her reflection. Her eyes were tired, but her jaw was set.
I survived five years without him, she reminded herself fiercely. I built my life with my own hands. I am not going to let a billionaire CEO intimidate me in my own workplace.
When she stepped out into the carpeted hallways, the tension in the administrative wing was palpable.
Staff members were scurrying back and forth with stacks of documents, whispering and talking in quiet, frantic huddles. Solaria Bay Resort had been under regional corporate ownership for years, but the news of an emergency buyout by Bolduc Dynamics, a massive global conglomerate based in Boston, had hit the local management team like a sudden earthquake.
" Jen! Thank God you're here!"
Marcus, Thomas's executive assistant, intercepted her near the double glass doors of the grand boardroom. He was wearing his usual immaculate grey suit, carrying a tablet, but his usual detached, formal demeanor was frayed around the edges.
" Good morning, Marcus," Jen said coolly, keeping her posture rigid. " I was told there was a foundation grant review scheduled for nine."
"The grant review has been restructured into an executive transition meeting," Marcus explained rapidly, ushering her towards the doors. "Mr. Bolduc finalized the controlling share acquisition at four o'clock this morning. He is officially the new primary owner and Chairperson of the Board for Solaria Bay Resort and its subsidiary properties."
Jen's stomach plummeted, though she kept her expression completely neutral. He actually did it. He bought an entire mufti million dollar luxury resort overnight just to establish a footprint in Cebu.
" The regional board members and the department heads are already inside," Marcus added in a lower, more personal tone, looking at her with a hint of genuine sympathy. " Mr. Bolduc is expecting you."
Jen nodded once, pushed open the heavy frosted glass doors, and stepped inside.
The executive boardroom was a vast, sunlit room featuring a massive mahogany conference table surrounded by leather chairs, with panoramic floor to ceiling views of the surrounding ocean.
Seated around the table were ten of the resort's highest ranking executives, all looking nervous, adjusting their ties and whispering amongst themselves.
At the head of the table sat Thomas Dave Bolduc.
He looked imperious, untamed and absolute. He wore an exquisite tailored dark suit that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding physical presence. His dark hair was brushed back smoothly, and his sharp, handsome features were set in a mask of formidable, unyielding authority.
Yet, the moment the heavy glass doors opened and Jen walked in, Thomas's dark brown eyes snapped up.
The entire room seemed to lose its oxygen for a split second. The intense, razor-sharp focus in his gaze locked onto Jen, tracking her every movement with a possessive, magnetic pull that sent an electric thrill and a spike of defensive panic straight down her spine.
" Miss Delos Santos," Thomas said, his deep, gravelly voice cutting cleanly through the nervous chatter of the room. " Thank you for joining us. Please take a seat."
He gestured to the leather chair directly to his right, the seat designated for the primary operational briefing lead.
Jen felt the eyes of every department head in the room burn into her back. Sitting right next to the owner was a clear statement of proximity and importance, one that would spark endless corporate gossip. But backing down now would show weakness.
Jen kept her chin high, her heels clicking firmly against the polished hardwood border as she walked around the long table and sat gracefully in the offered chair, she pulled her leather notebook out, opening it with deliberate, calm precision.
" Good morning, Mr. Bolduc," Jen replied, her tone completely formal, icy, and professional. " Welcome to Solaria Bay."
A faint, subtle curve touched the corner of Thomas's lips, a flash of dark amusement that lasted only a fraction of a second before his face hardened back into executive stone.
" Let's begin," Thomas announced, leaning back in his chair and resting his large hands flat on the mahogany table. " As of four am today, Bolduc Dynamics holds a seventy percent controlling stake in this property. Effective immediately, all operational budgets, expansion plans, and executive appointments will be routed directly through my office."
The general manager of the resort, a senior executive named Mr. Villa, cleared his throat nervously. " Mr. Bolduc, if I may ask... this acquisition was executed with extraordinary speed. Is there a specific strategic direction you wish for Solaria Bay to take under your leadership?"
" Security, foundation, and community integration," Thomas answered without hesitation, his voice ringing with absolute certainty.
" First, the resort's private security apparatus will be overhauled immediately by my personal team. Second, our annual grant to St. Anne's Academy will be increased fivefold, effective today."
Jen's fingers tightened around her pen until her knuckles turned white. St. Anne's Academy. He was openly funding his daughter's school under the guise of corporate philanthropy.
" And third," Thomas continued, his dark eyes slowly sliding sideways to fix onto Jen's pale, composed face," Miss Delos Santos will be spearheading the new Executive Hospitality and Family Welfare Initiative. She will report directly to me, effective immediately."
Whispers broke out around the table. The department heads glanced between Jen and Thomas, surprised by the sudden, massive elevation of an Assistant Hospitality Manager to a direct report of the billionaire owner.
Jen's chest heaved with suppressed anger. He was returning her into a corporate corner, using his immense wealth and legal authority to force her into daily contact with him.
" Mr. Bolduc," Jen said, her voice dropping into a smooth, dangerous register that demanded attention. She turned to face him directly, meeting his dark, intense gaze without flinching. " While I appreciate the confidence in my administrative abilities, The Family Welfare initiative requires extensive local groundwork. My current duties already require full-time attention."
" Your current duties are being reassigned to your assistant, Miss Delos Santos," Thomas countered smoothly, his tone silky, calm and utterly unyielding. " Your expertise in local operations is vital to my vision for this property. Unless, of course, you feel incapable of managing the responsibility?"
It was a trap, a direct challenge to her pride, executed with masterclass corporate precision in front of her peers. If she refused, she looked incompetent in front of the board; if she accepted, she was tied to his hip.
Jen's eyes flashed with a fierce, dangerous fire. " I am more than capable of, Mr. Bolduc. I simply value efficiency."
"Then it is settled," Thomas declared, standing up from his chair. His towering height instantly dominated the room, signaling the end of the meeting.
" The rest of you may return to your departments. Detailed transition memo will be emailed by Marcus. Miss Delos Santos .... stay behind. We need to review your new contract."
The room cleared out rapidly. The executive gathered their folders, casting curious, lingering glances at Jen before file and ranking out through the heavy doors. Marcus was the last to leave, offering Jen a subtle, respectful bow before closing the frosted glass door behind him.
The heavy click of the lock resonated like a trap snapping shut.
The silence in the vast boardroom was suffocating.
Jen stood up slowly from her leather chair, her hands trembling with rage as she slammed her notebook shut. She turned on her heel to face Thomas, dropping her professional facade entirely.
" How dare you!" Jen snapped, her voice trembling with suppressed fury. " How dare you use your money to corner me in front of my colleague! You bought an entire resort just to force me into an office with you?"
Thomas didn't flinch. He slowly unbuttoned his suit jacket, placing his hands into his trouser pockets as he took three slow, deliberate steps toward her. The cold, ruthless corporate titan vanished, replaced by the man whose dark eyes burned with an intense, possessive devotion.
" I told you last night, Jen," Thomas said softly, his deep voice vibrating through the quiet room. " I am not leaving Cebu. And Im not going to let you hide behind corporate titles or distance yourself from me."
" This is my career, Thomas!" Jen argued, her eyes stinging with tears of sheer frustration as she backed up until her lower back pressed against the mahogany conference table. " I worked for five years to build a clean, respectable life for Gioia and myself! You can't just barge into my workplace and buy my company."
" I didn't buy it to control you, Jen," Thomas murmured, stopping right in front of her. He reached out, his broad frame blocking the sunlight streaming through the windows , looming over her until she was completely wrapped in his shadow and the intoxicating scent of his sandalwood cologne. " I bought it to protect you."
" Protect me from what?"
" From the world," Thomas rasped, his voice dropping into a low, fierce whisper. He reached up, his long, warm fingers gently capturing her chin, tilting her face up so she was forced to look directly into his dark, tortured eyes. " Do you think I don't know what happens to single mothers in corporate structures? Do you think I'm going to let other men evaluate your worth or dictate your salary while I have billions sitting in banks? Everything I have belongs to you and Gioia, Jen. Everything."
Jen gasped softly, the heat of his fingers against her skin sending a terrifying, electric current through her veins. The dangerous, forbidden chemistry between them, the absolute pull that had ruined her life five years ago, was crashing back over her with the force of a tidal wave.
" I don't want your money, Thomas," she whispered brokenly, her breath hitching as his face hovered mere inches from hers.
" I know you don't." Thomas murmured, his thumb gently brushing across her lower lip, his dark eyes dropping to her mouth with a raw, desperate hunger. " That is why you are the only woman I have ever loved, but you are going to take protection, Jen, whether you like it or not."
Before she could form a reply ,the heavy double doors of the boardroom suddenly clicked open.
" Jen? The front desk said, You're still here."
A warm, gentle male voice cut through the thick tension of the room.
Jen pulled back sharply, breaking Thomas's grip on her chin.
Standing in the doorway was a handsome man in his late forties, wearing a clean linen shirt and carrying a leather medical bag. He had warm hazy eyes and dark wavy hair, and a soft, comfortable smile.
Dr. Lernand Fernandez.
Thomas turned slowly, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits, his broad posture shifting into an immediate, predatory stance as he glared at the intruder.
