The sound of her own voice from five years ago echoed across the wind- swept balcony, sharp and full of raw, bleeding hope. Hearing her younger self plead into that recorder felt like a physical blow to Jen's chest, ripping open wounds she had spent years trying to stitch shut.
"Babu... it's me again. It's day forty-two. I miss you so much. Please call me back.... I have something important to tell you...."
Jen stared at the small silver device resting in the palm of Thomas's hand. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps as the memory of that terrifying forty second day flooded her mind: the faint pink lines on the pregnancy test, the dizzying fear of being completely alone, and the desperate prayer that hearing about their baby would bring him running back to her.
She forced her gaze up to meet his. Thomas stood unyielding, his dark eyes burning into hers with a mix of fierce obsession, hidden pain, and an relentless demand for the truth.
"What was the secret, Jen?" Thomas repeated, his deep voice barely a whisper above the sound of the crashing waves below. He took a slow, calculated step closer, the scent of sandalwood and sea salt wrapping around her." You recorded thirty more messages after that one, begging me to listen, telling me you had news that would change everything. What were you trying to tell me?"
Jen's hammered against her ribs so violently she was certain he could hear it. The urge to scream the truth at him- to slap him across his handsome face and tell him he had a beautiful, brilliant five year old daughter named Gioia waiting at home- almost overwhelmed her.
No.
The survival instinct that had kept her afloat for five years surged back to life, casting a cold, protective ice over her exploding emotions. She couldn't break. If she confessed now, a man as powerful, wealthy, and possessive as Thomas Bolduc would use every legal team and corporate asset at his disposal to claim his child. He would drag her through courts, separate her from her daughter, or worse, drag Gioia into whatever dangerous corporate war had kept him away in the first place.
Jen reached out. Her fingers trembled only slightly, and she clicked the top button on the digital voice recorder.
The audio cut off instantly. Silence felt over the balcony like a heavy curtain.
" That recorder is ancient history, Mr. Bolduc," Jen said, forcing her tone to drop into a flat, icy register. She met his intense gaze without flinching, burying her pain beneath an impenetrable layer of anger. " You want to know what the big secret was? I wanted to tell you that I was losing my mind. I wanted to tell you that I was evicted from my apartment because I couldn't afford the rent on my receptionist salary alone. I wanted to tell you that I was begging for scraps while you were living like a king in Boston."
Thomas's jaws clenched tightly, a muscle ticking along his cheekbone." Jen......"
"You left me to drown, Thomas." She spat, taking a step backward to put space between them. " I was completely alone and humiliated. I spent months waiting for a savior who never came. That voice on your recorder? That girl is dead. She died the day she realized you weren't coming back."
A flash of genuine agony crossed Thomas dark eyes, cutting through his cold, ruthless exterior. He reached out to touch her arm, his fingers hovering inches away from her skin before he pulled back, his hand curling into a tight fist.
"I didn't abandon you because I wanted to, Jen." Thomas rasped, his voice raw with suppressed emotion. " You think I was living like a king? My father's partner was assassinated the moment he stepped off the plane in Massachusetts. They came after me next. my lab was burned to the ground, my research was stolen, and every line of communication I had was tapped by men who would have put a bullet through your head just to leverage me."
Jen froze, her breath catching in her throat as his words hung in the air.
" I was trapped in a room for eight months with armed guards outside my door, fighting off hostile take-overs and threats against anyone connected to me," Thomas continued, stepping closer until he was towering over her again, his eyes dark with desperate, dark fire.
"The only way to keep you alive was to let them believe you meant nothing to me. The only way to protect you was to stay dead. I lived in hell for five years, Jen... and the only thing that kept me sane was listening to those voice notes every single night!"
The confession hit Jen like a freight train, stunning her into silence. The image of a hunted, trapped Thomas fighting for his life in Boston clashed violently with the image she had held of a cold, indifferent man who had simply used her and thrown her away.
For a split second, her walls crumbled. The urge to reach out the deep lines of exhaustion carved into his face, was almost irresistible.
He protected me, her mind whispered. He stayed silent to save my life.
But then the face of little Gioia flashed before her eyes — her sweet smile, her bright curls, and the five years of fatherless milestones she had endured alone.Even if Thomas's reasons were noble, the reality remained unchanged: their world was still plagued by danger, power plays, and corporate shadows. Bringing him into Gioia's life wasn't just emotionally risky; it was dangerous.
Jen swallowed down the lump in her throat. Hardening her heart once more.
"I'm sorry for what happened to you, Thomas," Jen said softly, though her voice remained steady and distant. " Truly, I am. But it doesn't change where we are today. You made your sacrifices, and I survived mine. We are different people now. You are a billionaire CEO, and I am a woman who values her peace."
"Peace?" Thomas let out a low, dark chuckle, taking another step forward until his chest brushed against her shoulder, his proximity sending a sudden wave of heat through her veins. " There is no peace between us, Jen. You can try to fight it, but the moment I saw you in that ballroom, I knew I was never letting you go again."
" I am not your property, Thomas!" Jen warned, glaring up at him.
"No, you're not," Thomas murmured, his hand coming up to gently, impossibly softly, tuck a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear,
His fingers lingered on the soft skin of her jawline, his touch sparking that same forbidden, dangerous chemistry that made her knees go weak. " You're my weakness. And I always reclaim what's mine."
Jen gasped at the electrical current shooting through her skin, stepping sharply away from his touch. " The walkthrough is over, Mr. Bolduc. I will have the final lease documents emailed to your assistant."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked away. Her heels clicking against the marble floor as she exited the penthouse balcony, leaving him alone in the ocean breeze.
By the time five o'clock arrived, Jen was an emotional wreck. She quickly packed her bag, clocked out of the resort, and practically ran to her car. All she wanted was to hold Gioia, lock the front door, and pretend the rest of the world didn't exist.
Twenty minutes later, Jen pulled up outside Gioia's private preschool. The afternoon sun was warm, casting golden light over the playground where several children were running around waiting for their parents.
Jen stepped out of her car, smoothing down her skirt, and walked toward the gated entrance. She scanned the playground for her daughter's familiar yellow shirt and dark curls.
"Mommy!"
Gioia's happy scream rang out across the yard. Jen smiled, relief washing over her as she crouched down near the gated entrance, opening her arms wide.
Gioia came sprinting across the grass, but she wasn't alone. She was giggling, holding the hand of a tall man who was walking alongside her with easy, relaxed strides.
Jen's smile froze. The blood drained completely from her face.
Walking through the preschool gate, holding her daughter's tiny hand, was Thomas Bolduc.
He had removed his suit jacket, his dark navy shirt sleeves rolled up, revealing his strong forearms. He was looking down at Gioia with an expression of gentle, utterly captivated wonder — a look that instantly vanished the moment he looked up and caught sight of Jen standing frozen by the gated entrance.
" Mommy, look!" Gioia cheered, tugging Thomas's hand happily as she reached her mother. " This nice mister helped me pick up my drawing when the wind blew it away! He says he knows you!"
Thomas stopped right in front of Jen, his eyes dropping from Jen's terrified face down to the sharp, dark, almond-shaped eyes of the five-year-old girl standing between them.
The resemblance was undeniable. The sharp jaw, the analytical gaze, the exact shade of dark brown eyes.
Jen watched in absolute horror as realization slowly dawned across Thomas's features. His breath hitched sharply, his jaw going slack as he stared down at the little girl, then back up at Jen's trembling lips.
" Jen...." Thomas whispered, his voice cracking as the ultimate truth finally hit him like a thunderbolt. " Who is this?"
