The cool air of the private executive corridor hit Jen like a splash of freezing water, yet it did nothing to cool the raging fire burning beneath her skin. Her high heels clicked rapidly against the polished marble floor as she practically fled down the hallway, desperate to put as much distance as possible between herself and the man who had just upended five years of carefully constructed peace.
He's back, her mind echoed, spinning out of control. Thomas Bolduc is here, in Cebu, standing right in front of me.
Every step she took felt heavier than the last. Her lungs burned as she struggled to pull in steady breaths. For half a decade, she had convinced herself that the ghost of her past was buried deep, that the silence he left behind had hardened her into someone untouchable. But the moment his dark, piercing eyes locked onto hers across that crowded ballroom, every defense mechanism she had built crumbled into dust.
She rounded the corner toward the private staff elevators, her fingers trembling as she reached out to press the call button. Just a few more floors down, and she could escape to the exit, grab a cab, and rush home to hold her daughter. Just thinking of Gioia- her bright smile, her warm little arms wrapping around her neck - grounded Jen, pulling her back from the edge of panic.
I have to protect my daughter, Jen reminded herself fiercely, pressing her palm flat against the cool steel wall of the elevator foyer. He can never know about Gioia. If Thomas finds out he has a child, he will tear my world apart.
Before the elevator doors could slide open, a sudden, heavy pressure shifted the air behind her.
It was the sensation she would recognize anywhere- the clean, intoxicating blend of sandalwood, ozone, and expensive cedarwood. It was a scent that had once meant safety, warmth, and home, but now felt like a cage closing in.
A large, warm hand slammed flat against the metal wall right beside her ear, trapping her in place.
Jen froze, her breath catching violently in her throat.
" You think you can just walk away from me in the middle of a sentence, Jen?" Thomas's voice murmured right behind her ear.
It was low, rough, and vibrating with an intensity that made her entire body shudder.
Before she could turn or slip away, his other hand settled firmly onto her hip, pulling her back flush against his chest. The solid, iron- clad wall of his body enveloped her completely. She could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart pounding against her back, mirroring the erratic rhythm of her own.
" Let me go Thomas." Jen hissed, her voice tight suppressed fury as she tried to twist out of his grip. " This is highly unprofessional. If someone sees us-."
" Let them look." Thomas interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous, possessive growl. He didn't loosen his hold; if anything, his arm tightened around her waist, anchoring her firmly against him. " Let the whole world look. For five years, I've dreamed of this exact hallway, this exact moment, wondering if you were even still alive, wondering if you hated me as much as I hated myself."
" You hated yourself?" Jen scoffed, a bitter, humorless laugh slipping past her lips as she agreesively shoved her hands against the wall to create space. " Oh please. Don't play the victim here, Thomas. You were the one who walked away. You were the one who got on a flight to Boston turned off your phone, and vanished into thin air!"
" It wasn't that simple Jen!" Thomas snapped back, his voice cracking with a raw, buried anguish that caught her off guard.
His hand left her waist, and before she could process his movement, he grabbed her by the shoulders, turning her around to face him. The dim lighting of the private corridor cast sharp shadows across his face, highlighting the deep lines of exhaustion and torment etched around his eyes. He looked like a man standing on the edge of a precipice, staring down into an abyss.
" You think I wanted to leave?" Thomas whispered, his dark eyes searching her face as if memorizing every single feature he had been starved of for half a decade. His fingers trembled slightly against her shoulders. " You think I willingly walked away from the only piece of light I had in my entire life?"
" Then why didn't you answer?" Jen's voice broke, the years of accumulated pain, sleepless nights, and lonely tears finally bubbling over the surface. She stopped fighting him, her hands pressing flat against his chest as her eyes welled with hot, stinging tears that she refused to let fall. " Do you have any idea what it's like to talk into a void, waiting for a single text, a single right, a single word?"
Thomas flinched as if he had been physically struck, His gaze dropped to her lips. Then back to her eyes, filled with deep, agonizing remorse.
" One thousand voice messages," Jen whispered, her voice trembling violently. " I sent you one thousand voice messages telling you about my days, my fears, my hope,,...... and eventually, my absolute terror when I realized I was entirely on my own. Every single one of them went unanswered. You didn't just leave me, Thomas. You erased me."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell between them, broken only by the hum of the air conditioning unit overhead.
Thomas stared down at her, his jaw clenching as a dark, pained expression crossed his features. He opened his mouth as if to speak, to offer an explanation, to tell her the dark truth of the corporate conspiracy and family threats that had forced him into isolation to protect her life. But the words caught in his throat. He knew how hollow excuses sounded after five years of absolute silence. He knew that no matter what danger he had faced in Boston, the end result was the same: he had left her to drown.
" I know," Thomas said finally, his voice barely a breath sound. He reached up slowly, his calloused thumb gently brushing away a stray tear that had slipped past her defenses, tracing the curve of her cheekbone with heartbreaking tenderness.
" I know I don't deserve your forgiveness, Jen, i don't expect you to look at me with anything other than hatred after what I put you through."
The gentleness in his touch was more dangerous than his anger. It melted the ice around Jen's heart, making her ache for the man she had loved so desperately all those years ago. But reality crashed back down on her with terrifying force.
She slapped his hand away, stepping back with a sharp, defensive breath.
" You're right, you don't deserve it." Jen said, her voice hardening once again as she locked her emotions behind a wall of steel. She pointed a steady, accusing finger toward his chest. " Whatever forced you away five years ago, whatever corporate games you were playing in America- it doesn't matter anymore, my life is here, my world is here. And I have built a life that doesn't need you."
Thomas eyes darkened, a flash of fierce, territorial possessiveness flaring deep within his irises. The soft remorseful scientist vanished in an instant, replaced by the ruthless billionaire CEO who never lost a war.
" Your life might be here, Jen but you are still mine," Thomas murmured, stepping forward and closing the distance between them until his chest was a hair's breadth away from hers. " You never really left my heart, and I am not planning on walking out of your life a second time.We are tied together - by this undeniable, forbidden chemistry that neither of us can kill."
Before Jen could fire back a retort, the chime of the elevator echoed down the hallway, and the doors slid open.
Taking advantage of the momentary distraction, Jen slipped out from under his arm, stepping backward toward the safety of the elevator car. She pressed her hand against the open door button, her chest heaving as she glared at him one last time.
" Stay away from me, Thomas," she whispered fiercely. " Or you will regret it."
Without waiting for his answer, she stepped inside the elevator, punched the button for the ground floor, and watched through the closing glass doors as Thomas Buldoc stood alone in the hallway, his dark eyes burning with an obsessive, unyielding fire that promised the battle was only just beginning.
