As we stepped through the final door, the scene before me nearly stole my breath.
When I entered the club, I knew I had entered another world but entering the VIP lounge was like entering another planet entirely.
It was a darker, cooler shade of the main club. There were disco lights here and a DJ was playing but it was a different kind of style.
It seemed cooler like this place was made for the wealthier men. There was a grand stage at the center of the room, with a few silver poles on it. Poles we might be dancing on.
My gaze moved to examine the whole place and I could spot leather couches and low glass tables that shined under the cool lighting.
Everyone there, the VIPs, wore masks. They were either 3d printed masks or normal masks of animals. There was a rat mask and a fox mask, even a dragon's mask. The men and women laughed and clicked glasses of wine or whiskeys.
“This is insane,” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sultry jazz playing in the background.
“Better keep your head up, Emery,” one of the girls, Cynthia, I think, murmured as she sashayed past me. “VIPs here don’t just watch, they hunt.”
Her words sent a sweet chill down my spine.
I tried to steady my breathing as I followed the other girls toward the main floor.
I had done this before. A couple of times. So it wasn't that new. The only difference was the ones I was performing for.
Besides it wasn't exactly for me. I was doing this to get enough money to start my brother's treatment.
My brother would not die of cancer. I'd make sure of that.
My heels clicked softly against the marble, and I prayed I wouldn't trip. This was no ordinary strip club. This was way more than that.
The VIPs here were powerful Alphas. My wolf was restless inside of me. Something seemed to be disturbing her, probably probably the intoxicating scent of horny Alphas in the room.
We spread out, each girl choosing who to go entertain. I stayed back for a few seconds, my eyes scanning through the masked people, deciding on who to go meet. I could feel eyes on me, assessing abd interbally undressing me and despite my nerves, something inside me seemed to enjoy that.
My wolf surged forward, suddenly restless.
Not fear. Not desire.
Something deeper like a pull.
A somewhat familiar presence and scent.
My gaze was pulled, no, yanked, toward the center of a corner. There was less lightning there but it was still visible. And there he was, sitting like he owned the f*****g place. An Alpha of Alphas.
The Alpha I ran into on my way in.
"s**t!" I felt my body grip with fear.
Almost everyone in the room seemed to avoid him. Even the strippers didn't seem to move towards him.
His green eyes met mine and I shuddered at the glare behind them like he’d been waiting for me long before I walked through the door. I watched as his green eyes changed to black ones as the air on my skin rose.
I tried to look away.
I couldn’t.
He pointed a finger at me and signalled for me to come closer.
"Emery, what have you put yourself into?" I muttered under my breath as I took in a gulp.
My feet moved before my mind could catch up as I danced my way to his seat. He stared at me, accessing me. I could fee.the burn of his eyes on mine.
I didn't let it stop me. I danced around him, leaving him with ghost touches. I felt his hand twitch once...maybe twice. But he seemed to control himself well.
As I made the third round, my feet hit the table and I tripped. His hands reached me before I touched the ground.
His fingers around my bare waist. I felt the tingle, my wolf coming forward and my eyes glowing as the music and everything faded back.
His eyes darkened too as his wolf took over.
He pulled me to him and place me on his lap. I couldn't take my eyes off his and he too couldn't take his off mine. But for some reason, he broke the contact.
His eyes snapped shut as if he was reliving a memory. When he snapped his open, they went wide with shock.
"No. Can't be." He whispered.
My brows furrowed in confusion. "Pardon?"
He stood up suddenly and pulled her to an empty room and shut the door behind her.
"How did you get here? How are you here?" He asked, his arms still around my waist as he pushed me against the door.
"What do you mean?" I asked, suddenly feeling someway. I wanted to feel his arms around me.
He wasn't bloody mate. But now, he as acting like I was his lost sister."
"You're not safe with me." He suddenly said.
"I don't understand you." My voice was raised now. I didn't understand what was going on and I needed too. " Speak to me."
He shook his head and took a step back, his hands falling from my waist.
I knew what was coming before it even came. “I, Kai Blackthorn—”
My heart stuttered.
No!
“—reject you as my mate.”
It didn’t feel real at first.
Then something inside me… snapped.
A scream tore through my chest, silent but violent, as pain ripped through me, burning me out from the inside.
I hit the floor before I even realized I was falling.
